I have been folling this thread closely as I have a similar problem. I upgraded the hard drive in my Toshiba laptop and now can not run updates or get updates for MS Security Essentials. I have done all the steps you suggested to eurolobby- My windows validation comes up good with no errors. The results of my DIAG are similar:

Patrick - I've split your thread out into a new one to avoid confusion.
Your problem is indeed very similar to the one you responded to, but may still have significant differences, and causes.
I suspect that the problem lies in dll registration somewhere - so it may be a good idea to run the WU Reset fixit tool
