view hidden files and folders in windows explorer RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • hi
suddenly I cannot change the setting in windows explorer to view hidden files and folders
I am logged in as administrator.
when I attempt to change this setting it reverts back to do not show hidden files and folders.
I also unchecked the option to hide system files and folders thinking this may be the problem but
    it made no difference.
the only recent change I have made to computer was to add avg anti virus ver 8 the freeby
also tries to install ms one care but the download went to file 8 of 11 and hung up there.
finally got message due internet connection installation could not be completed.
I know this may be a problem...I am on a very slow dial up connection.

    thanks in advance

  • If you're referring to the OneCare Safety Scanner, the current download is about 40 Meg, that will take about 2 hours over a 56K dial-up connection.  The Safety Scanner runs from an ActiveX control, it is not installed as an Application, and would have no bearing on your Windows Explorer View settings.  The forums for the Safety Scanner are located here: http://boards.live.com/safetyboards/forum.aspx?ForumID=13

On the other hand, AVG is an installed Application and could conflict with any previously installed Anti-Virus, particularly if that AV was not completely removed prior to its installation.  Make sure that all other security software is removed, especially anything that has a real time component. If your prior security software offers a cleanup tool from the vendor, use it. Norton and McAfee offer such tools:
