Drive health? Monitoring and defragging RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there any way to ensure or monitor the ongoing drive health of HDDs in a WHS machine?

Because the drives don't appear in the OS as normal, there don't appear to be options to disc check or defrag the drives in the storage pool.  How do I ensure that the information is stored in an optimal way, that fragmentation is limited, and what options are there to check the health of drives?

My WHS is making a slightly odd noise - it seems like one of the drives might be on the way out, but everything in the OS and the console look fine?!

  • When storage is balanced, a series of health checks are run on all the drives.

  • WHS runs chkdsk on your drives twice a day automatically and adverse results are reported via the Server Health tool, AIUI.
