Non-Genuine Windows 7 Key? RRS feed

  • Question

  • This key came off of my Dell PC, purchased directly from Dell. I have used it on 2 VMs that are no longer in use, and I'm not sure I understand how the Windows 7 Licensing works... Any help is appreciated.

  • "That would be a form of software piracy."

Carey, I think calling this 'piracy' is not accurate.  Microsoft calls it 'casual copying'.  Piracy is fraudulent distribution for monetary gain and is prosecutable while casual copying is done for personal use and is handled with technology (WAT) and education.  I respectfully suggest editing the post and I will remove this one.

  • A Dell OEM Windows 7 product key is only valid on the Dell computer it originally came with.  Therefore, you cannot use the product key on any other computer.  That would be a form of software piracy.  If you wish to install Windows 7 on your apple computer, you'll need to start over and perform a "clean install" using a conventional retail Windows 7 Home Premium – Full Version license.

  • Some common types of software piracy include OEM unbundling which the OP apparently has done.  The Dell OEM Windows 7 license has been "unbundled" from the Dell computer it was originally installed on.

  • Sure.  But there is no indication that the user did unbundling for the purpose of selling illegal copies of Windows for profit.  The methodology does not define the offense.

  •  Definition of Software Piracy:

Unauthorized use of software: the illegal duplication of copyrighted software or the installation of copyrighted software on more computers than authorized under terms of the software license agreement.

If you were to read the Dell OEM Windows 7 License Agreement, it clearly states the software can only be installed on the hardware it came with, namely a Dell computer.  One does not have to "sell" the software in order to commit software piracy.  Simply violating the licensing terms constitutes software piracy.

  •   Actually, in this case term that should be use is Licensing Non-Compliance. But regardless, I am not really interested in labeling or accusing.

This forum is for resolving issues and the resolution to this customer's issue is achieved by educating him/her on the OEM Windows EULA licensing terms.
