Using FULL retail key for Anytime Upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • Please note that I'm trying to be lazy here - I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium!

I just got a bit of a bargain on eBay (A still shrink-wrapped version of Windows 7 Ultimate for £85!), and don't want to re-install.

Could I use this new product key (full retail version) to upgrade my Home Premium installationn (again, full retail version), and then still use the Home Premium key?
I don't want to have to start from scratch with another fresh install if I can help it!

Either way (upgrade or new instllation), can the old retail key be (legally) transfered? I want to install Home Premium into a virtual machine and have Ultimate as the main OS.
Please note that these are both the full retail versions of Windows 7.

    Thanks

This is wierd - I tried the Anytime Upgrade, and it said no way and stops.  Then I switch the computer on just now, and it says it's upgrading Windows. I thought, "OK, - I'll just restore the backup I did before I started all of this" - Then Windows wants to activate, so I do it.

It worked...! In the System properties, it says it's activated.

I just did another Windows Activation thing from Microsoft, and that says it's genuine Can I trust this? I don't want the key to stop working later on!

Here is the info from the Diagnostics tool - Is this legal or not?!?!

    No - it's not :(
Your Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account. You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key.(all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Please read the following stickies.... a lot of it isn't directly relevant to you, since you bought it pre-installed, but it will help in advising what to do next.

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

Please note that I'm trying to be lazy here - I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium!

Either way (upgrade or new instllation), can the old retail key be (legally) transfered? I want to install Home Premium into a virtual machine and have Ultimate as the main OS.
Please note that these are both the full retail versions of Windows 7.

The chances are that your eBay purchase is not legal anyhow - over 50% of software purchased there is not.
Unfortunately the easiest way to find out is to install it and see what the resulting PID is. An alternative method is to ring the Activation line and ask them what the source of the Key is - if it matches the expected source, then fine, but if they tell you that it's a Developers, or MSDN Key, or has ever been activated, then it's a fake.

Full Retail Licenses can be transferred between machines without a problem - although you may need to use telephone activation.
If your Ultimate License is genuine, then you should be able to use Anytime Upgrade to do the upgrade, without having to use the disk at all. If that doesn't work, then a normal upgrade is possible, so long as the disk is the same or higher SP level as the installed system.

  • Performing an upgrade procedure with a full license is not an upgrade for licensing purposes.  Microsoft uses "upgrade" to mean both a procedure and a license.  Don't confuse the two.  You can perform either a custom install or an upgrade install with either a full or an upgrade license but only using an upgrade license limits your further use of the preexisting OS.

Having said that, return the Windows 7 Ultimate for a refund while you can.  I guarantee you that you will not regret it.

eBay and other online auctions, as well as the Amazon Marketplace and scores of "discount" websites are filled with counterfeit copies of Windows 7.  See this video

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzqNNiOM0cs

These knockoffs are using MSDN product keys from subscriptions obtained through credit card frauds.  MSDN keys are not for resale keys that allow multiple activations, but only for the subscriber.  The counterfeiters are printing the keys inside very authentic looking "retail" boxes produced in China, Mexico, and who knows where else.  Microsoft is routinely blocking these keys as they discover their abuse.

Just scan around in this forum and see how many people are being caught by this scam.  I did.

  • Ok - I reckon it's fake!

Is there anywhere I can get the product key verified by Microsoft - either fake or not - I need a definate answer before I go after this bastard on eBay.

I cannot find the tech support number anywhere online - I mean the one you get in the Activate Windows screen when activation fails / stops working for some reason.
I read somewhere that I should try this.

Oh, one final thing - Don't buy Windows on eBay!

  • For verification do this:

In order to receive the best support, we request all users initially download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread.

P.S.  It's not just ebay. Bogus sellers are all over auction sites and the internet.

  • You need to purchase a full license copy of Windows 7.  That is how you get a product key.  If you have installed Ultimate already then be sure to purchase Ultimate so that all you need to do is enter the new product key at the Change Product Key link on the System Properties page.

It isn't only eBay.  The Amazon Marketplace is rife with fakes also.  Amazon Corp is reliable but the affialiates aren't.

Offhand, no - but if it's from the same source, then it's guaranteed to be a similar offering.
