  • The MCTS is the "lowest level" lertification, and the MCM is the "highest level", with MCPD and MCSD in between. MCSD is newer and MCPD is based on older versions of the software.

So, which one is better? Well, the higher certifications are better in the sense that they are more prestigious because they demonstrate a greater amount of knowledge. But they are also more difficult to acquire.

I suggest that you begin by getting an MCTS, which is comparatively easy. Then evolve to MCPD or MCSD depending on whether you are using Visual Studio 2010 or 2012. These certifications have several MCTS as a prerequisite, so the time you devoted to your first MCTS won't be lost.

Ideally, you would then evolve to the MCM, but as far as I know at this time there is no MCM for software developers (only for the IT-pros), so the MCSD would be your highest goal.

  • If you have not any certificate, the best way is to start from lowest - MCTS. After that, you will step by step go to higher level. But don't forget, certificate and knowledge are not the same. The best way is you be the best in your job.

  • The Microsoft Certified Master (MCM), Microsoft Certified Solutions Master (MCSM), and Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) certifications will be retired on December 31, 2013. Microsoft has decided not to maintain these certifications.

So MCSD and MCPD are the highest certification available for developers.
