Windows Validation Problem RRS feed

  • I've read dozens and dozens of threads related to this issue without luck, so hopefully this thread will go somewhere.

    I bought my laptop from Dell with Windows 7 pre installed.  Recently, Windows 7 decided it was not valid.  All attempts to validate it have failed.  I had a correspondence with Microsoft tech support, but they've given up on me.  Microsoft has confirmed that the OEM I'm trying to use is valid (it's the one printed on the bottom of the laptop).  It's different from the OEM that Windows is currently using, but I'm told that's because Dell uses a different OEM for pre installations.  So I want to change my product key to the one on printed on the bottom of the laptop.

    Here's what I've tried and the results:

    Running slui.exe 3 and entering the OEM.  Result?  An error message that reads: "The following failure occured while trying to use the product key: Code 0xC004F01F Description: The Software Licensing Service determined that the license is invalid."

    Running slui.exe 4 and entering the OEM.  Result? The same as the above.  It does not prompt me to enter my location or give me a phone number to call, so I cannot validate by phone.

    Going to the Systems Properties and clicking "Change Product ID" or something.  There is no such option.  It says: "Windows Activation - Status Not Available - Product ID: Not Available"

    Running cmd.exe and then running scandisk.  The results are that some files are corrupted and scandisk could not repair them.

    I've tried other things as well, but I can't remember them all right now.  I don't have the Windows 7 install disk, because it was lost in a recent move.

    My working theory is that some important security files were damaged by a virus, but Microsoft won't let me run Microsoft Security Essentials with a non-validated copy of Windows.

    Still the same error, I’m afraid – until we can get rid of that there’s little we can do....
    There may be a problem with either the file system or Windows in general, so lets see if we can cure it that way...
     
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
    right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key
    You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

    After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

    SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
    right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
    Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

    run another MGADiag report, and post the results.
     
    Once that’s complete try running the CheckSUR tool, and post back with the results – upload the log file to your SkyDrive and post a link in your response.

    Your Product Key here is the Default (Keyless Install) Key – which means that someone neglected to enter the correct Key during the installation, or that the data has been deleted.
    The fat that you are also getting a 0xC004F012 error would tend to indicate the latter, and that the Licensing Store is corrupted.
     
    Recreate the Licensing Store
    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

    Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

  • This issue is far from resolved.  I've got a newborn baby here and I just don't have the time to devote to this all at once.

    I ran chkdsk. It got through the first 3 tests without finding anything, then it got 20% into the 4th test and it got stuck.  I let it hang for a few hours and then rebooted.

    I ran SFC and got the error message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

    I've also noticed that Windows is starting to not recognize certain drivers.  Obviously something is tearing apart my system.  Of course I can't check my computer for viruses effectively, because Windows won't let me use Security Essentials, since it thinks my copy of Windows is invalid.  That's a nasty piece of DRM that Microsoft included.

    Here's the report, but I'm guessing nothing changed.

    This issue is far from resolved.  I've got a newborn baby here and I just don't have the time to devote to this all at once.

    I ran chkdsk. It got through the first 3 tests without finding anything, then it got 20% into the 4th test and it got stuck.  I let it hang for a few hours and then rebooted.

    I ran SFC and got the error message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

    I've also noticed that Windows is starting to not recognize certain drivers.  Obviously something is tearing apart my system.  Of course I can't check my computer for viruses effectively, because Windows won't let me use Security Essentials, since it thinks my copy of Windows is invalid.  That's a nasty piece of DRM that Microsoft included.

    Here's the report, but I'm guessing nothing changed.

     

     
     
     
    If CHKDSK is failing then you possibly have a dying hard drive – back up your data to external storage NOW.
    Then download the HD manufacturer’s Disk Test utility, and run the short test first – if that finds problems, RMA the drive, or replace it.  If it passes the short test, then run the full test – again, if it fails, RMA or replace the drive.
