USB Drive Missing / Not Added at the same time RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I've got a WHS with 4 USB drives. I have onboard USB and a usb pci controller card. I have 2 plugged into onboard, and 2 plugged into the controller.

My Disk Management console looks like this.

The two disks listed at the top, Unknown and Disk 2, are the SAME DISK.  Sometimes if I can unplug/replug/reboot enough it will come back and register as the missing disk, but then as soon as I have to reboot or anything it will probably go out again. Despite the 0% listed on Disk 2, it does have about 750GB of WHS data stored on it.

My WHS is an old Dell. It has zero (0) SATA ports and zero (0) firewire ports. It also has one (1) internal drive bay which is being used by the system drive.

Here is some extra information that may help. My Device Manager USB Controllers

I found a post about this from 2008 , but I have 750GB of data on this offending drive and I can only follow that solution so many times before giving up.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Can you plug the disk into a client PC and look at it using Disk Manager.  Might be a good idea to clean all the partitions off it while you are there.

What is the make and model of the USB Drive?

(p.s. didn't mean to propose this as the answer).

  • To be honest, I think there's something going on with the drive, or with the bridge electronics in the enclosure. I would go out tomorrow and buy a new external drive, from a different manufacturer. I would then:

    • disconnect the one causing the problems,
    • remove it (using the console),
    • add the new drive to the storage pool,
    • connect the old drive to some other computer,
    • copy everything I found on that drive under <driveletter>:\DE\Shares to the server shares,
    • if removing the drive resulted in a warning that you would lose backups, use the Repair button in the console, followed by a backup cleanup.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • @Al West

I can plug the drive into another computer and it spins up and is accessible fine.  I will check it out in Disk Manager when I get home.  The make and model is a Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB or a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB drive in an macally T-S350SU 3.5" USB & eSATA External Enclosure .  Two of the 1TBs I have hooked up are Green and the other one is Black.  I'm not sure which this is but I can check when I get home.

I'll give this a shot tonight.  First I'll swap out the enclosure though because I have a spare.  As you can see I don't have the room to do it without adding another drive, so I'll plug in my new 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green (Yes as another USB drive) after removing the failing drive but before trying to copy everything over to the server. It'll take quite a while to copy both ways so I'll respond but it'll be a day or two.

    Thanks!

I placed the offending drive in a different enclosure and turned it back on.  It was immediately recognized.  I rebooted to get rid of file conflicts and it came up great.  Hasn't had the problem since.  Crossing fingers.  If it works for a week I'll RMA the enclosure.

    Thanks Ken!!!!!

  • Rats.  Drive failed again today.  Enclosure is not the problem.  Now I'm guessing it's the drive itself.  I'll go ahead and copy everything off, remove it from the array, plug in and add my new drive to the array, and copy everything over the network.  If that doesn't work I'll be buying parts to go internal instead of USB.

I wonder if I should get a firewire PCI card and if that would help the situation, getting that drive off the USB controller.

  • I would like to replace my failing 1TB drive with a new, empty, 2TB drive, but it is difficult to do because of the amount of storage on it (full drive).  What I am trying (and it may fail miserably) is...

    1) Plug in 2TB drive to WHS as an external and format it with WHS

    2) Plug both failing 1TB and WHS formatted 2TB into an alternate PC

    3) Copy D:\DE\shares folder from 1TB drive to 2TB drive

    4) Plug 2TB back into WHS.

I am not copying over the D:\DE\folders or D:\DE\DEguid.txt, just the shares.

Now bear in mind that this drive contains a lot of data, and I am guessing a lot of 'replicated' data.

  • Cloning isn't supported, and your procedure will not work as you think it should, since you won't be duplicating all the information Windows Home Server uses to identify a drive. Instead:

    • Unplug the failing drive.
    • Plug in the new drive.
    • Add the new drive to the storage pool.
    • Remove the old (missing) drive from the storage pool. Accept warnings about loss of files or backups if displayed.
If you were warned about losing files:
    • Connect the old drive to some other computer.
    • Copy from <drive>:\DE\Shares\etc. to your server's shares. You may not recover all files; it will depend on what was wrong with your drive.

If you were warned about losing backups:

    • Use the repair function in the console to repair the database.
    • Then use the cleanup function to clean up the database.
