Dan is correct.
Build lab: 6002.lh_sp2beta.081017-1605 means you have the Service Pack 2 Beta installed. In past SP Beta and Release Candidates, when it was close to expring, you would get a black background and a message that was similare to Non-Genuine messaging.
With the SP2 Betas I have seen, users don't seem to be able to reactivate.
Please uninstall the Service Pack 2 Beta, reboot, then try the below steps. (if you need assistance with uninstalling the Service Pack, please see http://support.microsoft.com/ph/11732#tab0 and click the link "Free support for Vista Service Pack issues"
1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Restart your computer twice.
12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate. (be sure to enter the Product Key from the sticker on the side or bottom of the computer and to Activate using the 'By Phone' option).Thank you,

Hello salvageman,
I haven't seen this before in a Vista mgadiag report:
Build lab: 6002.lh_sp2beta.081017-1605
Not sure what to make of it, but it probably has something to do with your current problems....
