purpose of broadcast and network id ?

Question
-
hi, let say i have been given an ip address where i need to do sub-netting. ex:
x.x.x.x /28. after doing the sub-netting i would end up with the 'Network ID', range of IP that can be used and the 'Broadcast ID'.
So, the range of ip's i know that is for the hosts..printers, computers ..etc. where do i use the broadcast and network id? What is for exactly?
can someone help me please. Thanks in advance.
ex:
network id range broadcast id
x.x.x.16 17-30 x.x.x.31

You don't "use" them as they are reserved and not for clients.

The broadcast address allows data to be sent to all IPs in the subnet. The network ID identifies all hosts that are on the same network. You need to split it out into binary to understand. The "all-ones" broadcast address, and the first grouping of bits to identify what network the hosts are on when subnetting.

i do understand the calculation and the binaries. my question was where or how do i actually use the broadcast id and the network id, if so where do i actually use them. where in network do i use these? is it for the subnetmask or router....etc ?
thanks
