To copy or to move RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to get some feedback on when to copy and when to move files?  Also, what best practices are when re-creating a profile.

I like to copy even though it may take longer because if the copy fails, I still have all the original files in one place.  A co-worker was re-creating a profile and moved all the files

She moved them to another user's profile so Profile A Desktop icons were moved to Profile B Desktop.  The same was done with My Documents, My Pictures, etc.  Now the profile was an administrator profile, but when I need to recreate a profile, I copy all the user files to a single folder either in the root of C: or to a folder I created on the admin desktop, which gets deleted when the user profile is rebuilt.

She told me that she moves instead of copies because sometimes files get corrupted when copying.  I cringe because in the extremely unlikely event of a power failure during a move, it's possible to lose a lot more data.
