CRM 4.0 & 2011 on same server.

Question
-
Hello all,
Is it possible to install a new CRM 2011 org onto a server already running CRM 4.0? I'm trying to find out if this is possible or potentially a bad thing due to CRM Windows servers, etc....
Thanks,
John.

Jehanzeb, you could not have the config db for both servers on the same database server as I stated originally which would be problematic for using the same sql server.
Then the registry keys and other items could be an issue and conflict for the rest of the server.
Also, the implementation guide requirements for hardware and such are not taking into account two CRM servers and I can say from experience that CRM 2011 needs a lot of resources. I think that if it was possible to have two on the same box that 1. CRM 2011 might not play nice with 4.0, and 2. that having the two instances would probably slow down the performance for both applications considerably. There are a number of forum posts on this forum about how some people already are dissatisfied with the performance of CRM 2011 and so I think you would really want to avoid the scenario you have spoken of.

I don't believe it's supported. I would bet there would be conflicts(registry keys, etc...). Is the same server also the database server? If so there couldn't be two MSCRM_config databases which would give you a problem.

There is a separate SQL server, but yes, the CRM 4 instance would share the same server as the CRM 2011 instance.

Hi,
I would suggest you to have CRM on seperate servers and a single SQL Server with good amount of memory for hosting two instances (1st for CRM 4.0 and 2nd for CRM 2011)
Update: What i mean is that you can have a one SQL Server physical machine hosting two seperate SQL Server Database Engine Instances (this will do the job)

Hi,
It is not possible because while installation itself you get error that MSCRM_config databases its already exist. If u install also u must delete one MSCRM_config database.

In addition to the suggestions above, there are many reasons why you can't host CRM 2011 and CRM 4 onto the same web server. Some of these are:
- Naming conflicts for the application pool
- Crm 2011 uses a publisher policy to handle extensions that use the Crm 4 SDK assemblies. This would break a CRM 4 server
- Neither setup program would allow a new installation when the other installation already exists
