remote set up of a computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a computer that is not going to be connected to my network except remotely. Can I install the network software and allow it to backup and share files over the internet?

  • Not "out of the box". It's possible to set up a VPN connection using e.g. Hamachi, but Windows Home Server is designed to back up your home PCs, and a remote PC isn't a "home PC". You will need to do the fist backup of the PC locally (an initial backup is typically much larger than following backups), but after that should be able to back up using the VPN connection.

Once you've backed your remote PC up, though, you'll still face a challenge should you ever need to do a bare metal restore. It would take a very long time to restore a typical PC over the internet, and the restore CD doesn't support VPN connections anyway. So you would have to either restore locally to a hard drive that you would then ship or carry to the remote location, or you would need to bring the remote PC home to restore it.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
