upgrade crm 2011 beta to crm 2011 RTM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello All,

We have server with the CRM 2011 Beta (CRM-email Router, CRM Server, CRM Reporting Extensions - all have version 5.0.9585.9) we are trying to upgrade CRM 2011 to CRM 2011 RTM. I have searched the web and found CRM Blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/crm/archive/2010/09/10/microsoft-dynamics-crm-upgrade-scenarios.aspx) that in order to upgrade from Beta to RTM we need to upgarde to RC first then to RTM. However, all the links posted to download RC has been re-directed to RTM.

Is there any way to upgrade form Beta to RTM without the need to upgrade to RC first? if not, then how/where can I download CRM 2011 RC?

    Thanks,

    Yassar

  • Hi Yasser,

All the blogs/articles would have focused on upgrading from Beta to RC because most people using the beta would have been eager to get their hands on RC.

In theory, your beta database should import into an RTM deployment, I haven't tried it (I doubt you'll find many people who have!) and being a beta, you will receive limited support but I would follow the same steps that were given for the beta > RC upgrade (i.e. uninstall the beta, install the RTM then import your beta database in deployment manager).

If you are worried, try taking a backup of your beta database and create a virtualised environment containing RTM before importing your beta database.

Mark Kovalcson wrote a good blog on how to create a CRM2011 virtual environment http://crmscape.blogspot.com/2010/09/creating-ms-crm-2011-vm-part-1-of-2.html

    Hope that helps,

  • Hi Yassar,

You can upgrade to RTM from Beta by trying the following:

    1. Backup your CRM Beta database (orgname_MSCRM)
    2. Install the RTM CRM server with all of its components (you will need a new environment).
    3. Restore the backup in SQL server
    4. Then attempt to import your Beta organization using deployment manager

I'm not sure if there is any official support from Microsoft for upgrading Beta to RTM but it should work fine.

  • Hi Yassar,

There may a risk of failure as this is not confirmed and mentioned in any official Microsoft document so try cosdier creating a seprate environment for this and if you have not made any changes to the exsisting CRM program files directory then you can export CRM default solution customizations and take full database backup of ORG_MSCRM database and MSCRM_CONFIG.

You can also refer to the following link (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg583944.aspx) for backup detials instructions.

  • Thanks for all your replies. I do have the following questions:

    1. Can I do an in-place upgrade without having to create a separate environment?

    2. How to backup customization and what other files/folders I need to backup just in case?

    Thanks,

    1. You can try, I'm not sure if it is supported. Make sure you backup your server first! (If you can, backup the entire server, otherwise backup at least the 2 SQL databases)
    2. You should backup your SQL database for the organization (ORG_MSCRM) and (for safety) also the configuration database (MSCRM_CONFIG)
