legitimate Office 2007 gets "not genuine" message. RRS feed

  • Question

  • My copy of Office 2007 enterprise is giving me a "not genuine" message when it starts, but I installed downloaded it from MS and used a legal volume license.  the diagnostics appear below.   BTW, I also have the license key for Office Ultimate -- if I need to "re-activate" it, how do i enter the new key?  Thanks!

It shows that you have two installations of Office Enterprise 2007. Since the second installation is not activated, it will be reported by the OGA Notifier as nongenuine.

Uninstalling that second, unactivated copy of Office Enterprise 2007, then restarting twice and then validating Office once more at www.microsoft.com/genuine should correct the situation.

  • Thanks for the advice Dan.  That *almost* worked, but now i may have a worse problem.

I uninstalled one of the two installed versions using Programs and Features.  The entries looked identical so I uninstalled the second entry.  Following the uninstallation,

    1) [BAD]  All of my Office shortcuts have disappeared.
    2) [GOOD] The EXEs are there in  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office1
    3) [GOOD] they run OK and they report that they have already been activated.
    4) [BAD]  The genuone Advantage Diagnostics reports error "108 Invalid VLK".  The full report appears below.

So, I can recreate "ugly" shortcuts by right-clicking on the exe and creating a shortcut on the desktop then copying it to  C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office.  But I am worried that these are not the correct prodcut shortcut entries.

    Questions:
    1) How do I get the legitimate shortcuts back (there is not a "Repair Office" menu entry)?
    2) How do I fix the "108 Invalid VLK" entry?  Is this going to bite me down the line?

    Thanks fot the help!

  • Hello tca9,

It looks like you picked the wrong Office 2007 Enterprise to uninstall :-(

You can address this in one of two ways:

    (1)  Uninstall the one that is on the computer now, which is showing as an invalid Volume Licensing Key installation.  restart, then install the genuine one that was accidentally removed.  Restart once more and visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button to clear the OGA Notifier cache and verify that your Genuine Office Validates normally, meaning that your genuine Office is back on the computer.

    (2)  Try to change the Invalid Product Key on the existing Office 2007 Enterprise installation to the genuine Product Key that was used for the one you uninstalled.  This MS KB tell you how to change an Office Product Key:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895456  Once that procedure is completed, restart and visit www.microsoft.com/genuine to click on Validate Office to verify that the Product Key was changed and that Office validates normally.

  • Hi Dan,
Your instructions worked for me.  Thanks!
I chose option (2), to update my registry.  The instructions at your link worked (  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895456 ), but with one extra step required.  I found 4 Registration keys; to identify which key to use I ran Outlook | Help | About and checked the licensed ProductID.  Only one of the 4 registry entries matched this and I was able to clean it up per the instructions.

    Thanks again,
