Making better use of screen space?

Question
-
I use a netbook for web posting from time to time to a WordPress blog with WLW 14.0.5025.904. Now I know WLW is in beta and I love it, however a few things really cause me hassle:
On a netbook with a 1024x600 screen size WLW really shows off how badly it makes use of available screen space. I can't turn off or move any of the toolbars and some of the options disappear off the bottom of the screen (like saving the default image settings).
Is there any chance WLW could be adjusted to either make better use of screen real-estate or allow us to move toolbars and button around?
Have a look at my quick before/after shots to see what I'm suggesting:
Before image
Suggested look afterwards
I can't get to the "save settings as defaults" image button at the moment which is really frustrating.
On another point, where are all the settings like image defaults stored? I'll edit it manually if I have to.

OliFoS - thanks for submitting the issue and Scott, thanks for ensuring we took note of it.
Wanted to let you know that we're aware of this issue and will have a fix avaiable in a future release. In the meantime, sorry for the inconvenience.

With the save settings problem, are you trying to access it when inserting a local image, or a web image? The default settings can't be accessed when it's a web image.

The save settings option is a link at the bottom of the image properties bar, which is off the bottom of the screen. This means that images inserted from a local file system are inserted with default settings each time.Friday, September 19, 2008 11:44 AM

Aha, I see what you mean now. Yes, I can recreate this. The Writer team should see this thread, but I'll raise it up to them on your behalf :)

Thank you. ;)
It'd be great if there was some way to minimise the number of toolbars on the screen and make best use of screen space.
I know we've all got several huge screens at home, but not many people carry them around.

Indeed :) I have raised this bug with the Writer team now :)

I've just loaded up the new "Live Experience" release but I still can't see the bottom of the image properties pane on a netbook screen. Sadly I think the new release actually wastes more screen space! I'll have to compare later.
Can we at least get a scroll bar on the image pane so that those of us with a netbook can scroll to the bottom of the pane to click the "set defaults" link?

Sorry we weren't able to do this in this release. I spent some time on it but it's actually kind of complicated to get it to work for the image sidebar (you can see that we added a scrollbar to the default sidebar, which was easier). It's high on the list of things to do for the next release.Friday, December 19, 2008 6:04 AMModerator

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your efforts. When you do get to being able to sort this is there any chance we can have the ability to toggle on and off the various toolbars?
I do have one question though, where can I edit the WLW's saved settings such as the image defaults? I can't save default settings at the moment as I can't click the button :) Is there a registry setting or file I can edit or copy over from my other machine to por the settings?

There are some registry settings you can change for these. The settings are per blog and can be found at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Writer\Weblogs\<BlogGUID>\ImageDefaults where <BlogGUID> is the GUID of the blog in question. Please remember, you should only change registry settings if you are comfortable with editing the registry and as a standard disclaimer, I am not responsible if you toast your PC. However, you can find all the settings you need in that registry key.

You couldn't get it done back in October of 2008. Now it's almost October of 2009 (one year later). When do you expect to have these changes made?Sunday, September 13, 2009 2:09 AM -

I can't see that any of the other promised fixes materialised in recent releases of WLW. Which makes me think that the project has probably been mothballed.Monday, September 28, 2009 2:32 AM -
I would have to agree. Livewriter seems to have stalled in development. I did take the time to point out problems and issues in the design. They have been acknowledged and then nothing for a year. I really don't think I will bother next time :(Monday, September 28, 2009 7:09 AM

Live Writer hasn't stalled, don't worry :) http://liveside.net/main/archive/2009/09/16/wave-4-live-writer-to-get-the-ribbon-interface.aspx. Admittedly, the release schedule (well, mainly the gap between releases) does suck, but it's the same for the other Windows Live client programs.

Except the other Live programs got updates this year. I didn't even see material bug fixes for WLW with the post Windows 7 release (especially the Jump List bug I identified months ago).
It would be good to get official Windows Live representation during the Windows private betas instead of having bugs with Live progs blown off.Monday, September 28, 2009 8:48 AM -
Unfortunately it looks like MS are moving away from the private betas. I would be very surprised (although happily surprised) if they do a private beta for Wave 4.

I'm sure they'll keep up the Windows private betas that I was referring to.Monday, September 28, 2009 8:53 AM

I know which private betas you're on about (I'm on them too), I just wouldn't be surprised if they just go with a public beta for Wave 4.

Yes, but my point is that they a captive audience of technically-oriented beta testers for Windows releases, who are also testing Live bits on those platforms, yet they are not interested in collecting bug reports from that audience. I know how atrocious Microsoft is at collecting data from public betas (having been at various times a Microsoft beta supervisor, a program manager, an MVP, an invited beta tester and a customer).Monday, September 28, 2009 8:58 AM
