Home Server Connection Limits - Further Questions RRS feed

So, I know all about the "10-user" limit for Windows Home Server, but what I'd really like to know is some further information on just what *parts* of WHS are limited in this way.  For instance:

    - I understand that only 10 different users can be using the connector software and having backups created.

    - What about the number of "users" that can be *setup* in WHS?  Is this also a maximum of 10 or only 10 concurrently?

    - How about standard file shares?  Can only 10 people access file shared on WHS?

    - What about the underlying IIS install on WHS?  Once again, 10 concurrent connection limits or otherwise?

I'm not trying to get around the 10-user limit in WHS so much as actually understand where the limit is enforce and where it is not!

    Thanks!

    Hi Matthew

    - What about the number of "users" that can be *setup* in WHS?  Is this also a maximum of 10 or only 10 concurrently? - its a total of 10 user accounts that can be created.

    - How about standard file shares?  Can only 10 people access file shared on WHS? - nope, as many people as your bandwidth and server will allow :-)

    - What about the underlying IIS install on WHS?  Once again, 10 concurrent connection limits or otherwise? - as per the file share question, but will also depend what you want to do with IIS I suppose as WHS doesnt "really" support you do anything else with IIS (not that it wont work though, just that you are not given any WHS type interface to do anything)

Is there any intention for Microsoft to offer add-on license packs for WHS so more user accounts can be added if needed?

  • Hi Ron

Not that I am aware of - remember its a Home Server and as such home many homes have more than ten computers / users in them. Yes there will exceptions, but my guess, and its just a guess, that this would be so small as to no warrent the expense and dev time required.
