Streaming TV on WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm curious whether or was not the WHS was able to receive a TV signal with a tuner card and pump that signal out throughout the server in other words use the server as kind of a media server? If not is there any way to make this possible in the near future? I think personally that people would use this function a lot through their house and would become a useful tool.

  • Assuming the software will install on Windows Server 2003, and assuming it can be configured to use a network share as it's storage location, then yes this could probably be done. There would be some problems; this sort of software is often not designed to be run as a service; it usually requires desktop access.

However, WHS already has the ability to stream media (via Windows Media Connect 2.0) built in. You might want to consider using other more capable systems for the actual recording, and use WHS for the serving.

  • TV tuner support and recording is bending the purpose of WHS.  I think Microsoft is striving to make a noticeable difference between WHS and Windows XP variants.  While it is likely possible for you to do this, why not just use XP?  (this begs for a "why use WHS over XP anyway" kind of question...)

One thing that WHS has to have is stability.  To achieve that Microsoft has to limit the supported features/devices to prevent third parties from making drivers that can potentially corrupt or crash WHS.

I've come to think of WHS as a NAS drive on steriods.  It's several times faster than my NAS drive, offers an intuitive back-up service and can stream media to my networked PC's and stream media (via 3rd party) across the internet.  It also offers a 'safe' way for me to remotely control my PCs from the internet.

  • This has been talked about a lot but the main reason I have seen is, people want one machine for all serving needs.  Serving TV off this machine would get rid of one machine humming away 24X7. /shrug

  • yup - being able to serve live TV to a client machine from WHS would be a huge selling point for me personally.

Fingers crossed they put it in...

  • You can already do that with SageTV which officially support WHS http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22692

  • It's for  AMD LIVE! Home Cinema and AMD LIVE! Home Media Server, not WHS

If you want to stream archived programs Use the method Ken Mentioned (Media Connect) If you want to stream Live (or near Live) media from a tuner card, the tuner card needs to be installed in the server (to eliminate a 2 way traffic bottlneck on the network) Download the Windows Media Encoder 9 to capture the tuner video and publish it to Windows Media Server included in WHS. The link below will show you how to set up the Encoder to stream live video from your tuner, Webcam or other source.

  • Thanks for posting that link - the previous one makes no reference to WHS. Sounds promising!
