    What I am seeing more of with "Vail" is a move towards the server being the key home infrastructure component,

    and I am all for that.

     

    What I don't see in "Vail" is a recycle bin for the shared folders for files deleted on the server.

    On  my network XP, Vista, and W7 users all have their "My documents" hosted in the WHS. 

    This works fine and deleted files end up in the local recycle bin.

    BUT for shared folders deleted files are DELETED, gone, kaput, history.

    Can we please have an undelete, or recycle bin for shared folders.

    We are working to enable previous versions on shared folder by default in the next milestone. This will give you the ability from a client PC to right click on a server share, and browse for previous versions. In the mean time, you can manually configure previous versions on the shares using explorer running the server:

    ·         Select the volume drive, right click, configure shadow copies

    The default schedule will take a snapshot twice a day.

    We have looked into exposing the recycle bin for a share on the server, unfortunately the recycle bin in Windows only captures files that are deleted locally on the machine.

    When you delete a file from a share on a server, the file doesn’t go in to the share’s recycle bin on the server. We chose Previous versions as it is the standard way Windows Server provide this functionality.

    Mark,

    Is shadow copies stable in Vail?  Obviously it never worked right in V1 (at least not without a little "server desktop trickery" after a reboot  :)  ).

    Indeed they are, this is one of the other benefits with the block based approach, snapshots don't need to be synchronized across 3 different NTFS volumes.

    Shadow copies fail in V1 because of where in the stack VSS sits relative to Drive Extender, and because of synchronization issues that causes.

    In Vail, Drive Extender is well below VSS in the driver stack...

    This is a great start, but sort of a halfway house between undelete from a recycle bin, and a WHS daily backup.

    But surely it would be possible (and maybe not too hard) to make the WHS recycle bin a shared folder?

    One note about turning on Previous Versions:

    Probably you shouldn't bother for the backup database. :)

    This is a great feature that I have been fudging with in v1.  It doesn't work all the time, so I don't rely on it, but when it works, it is very convenient.

    That brings me to my question: In v1, the shadows would always get wiped near midnight, accompanied by a cryptic system log entry "shadow storage failed to grow in time" which seems like the main reason it didn't work properly for me.  I never understood it, but is that still going to happen or will the shadows stay until wiped by size limits or user intervention?

    They should be fine for extended periods.

    "Shadow storage failed to grow in time" is a vague message with more than one cause, unfortunately, and I'm quite certain that the way Drive Extender works was one reason you were seeing that error.
