Project 2010 slow to open files over WAN RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Sir/Madam

Would anyone have any ideas as to what causes Project 2010 files to be slow opening and closing over a 100MB WAN connection?  Every other type of file on this particular file server works well over the WAN it is only Project files.  Would it be something to do with the way Project reads data?

    Thank you,

    Louise

  • Louis,

Are you trying to open MPP file from remote location? Did you try downloading this file locally?

  • Hi Louis,

As you mentioned, project files are little complicated than other office files. So, did you try downloading the files to local system and then try opening the files?

  • Hello Louise,

Since the users are working with the Project MPP file on a Network Share and you may want to check for different versions of Project Client/Service Pack/Cumulative updates. It can be easier to have everyone access files from a Network Share, however in the case of Project it is not recommended to open, edit, or save files that are stored on a remote network share. This may be a common cause for slow opening/performance issues...

As suggested by others and in order to avoid the slowness/performance issues, the MPP file may be copied to the local machine before opening.
Open it in Project from the local machine, make changes and save, and then copy the MPP file back to the network share.

You may also think of deploying the latest Project Client cumulative updates.

    Thanks,

    Mohammed.
