Error 8179 usually indicates an "unknown server" error and should clear upon a retry at a later time. It should certainly not last a month. There were problems accessing the Billing site yesterday, 10/27/08, and perhaps a few days before, as the servers were all updated with the security patch released late last week and that appears to have caused some issues for some LiveID enabled sites and services for a few days.
If the problem persists for you, please contact support. If you have contacted support and have not been helped, please post your case ID here and I'll see about having it investigated by Microsoft.

I have a new copy of OneCare and want to renew my subscription. Twice, over two days, when I have gone to billing.microsoft.com, I have gotten the following error message:
Temporarily Unavailable
Due to a very high number of connections to our website we are unable to process your request at this time. Please try again later. If this problem persists, please contact Customer Support.
What's going on? How can I process my renewal using my new product key?

At what point are you seeing this error, drtdk?
Try accessing it via https://billing.microsoft.com
Can you also confirm that you are trying to sign in with the correct subscription LiveID?

I deleted the cookies for microsoft.com and billing.microsoft.com and the problem vanished. I can now sign in and access my billing info. I'm also renewed (although it is not yet reflected in my OneCare software).
Thanks for your follow-up.
All the best.
