  • Hello Kevin,

The product key printed on the Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) affixed to the bottom of your Dell laptop applies ONLY to the installed Operating System.  It is not supposed to work for Office.

A TRIAL version of Office may have been installed on the laptop.  If so, you can get a trial product key at this Microsoft website:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101759021033.aspx

However, you did specifcally write "Office Basic" which is available purchased (not a trial) preinstalled from major manufacturer OEMs.  In such case, your Product Key is located on the CoA affixed to the plain white CD folder that holds your Office Basic 2007 hologrammed CD.

In some cases OEM installations of Office Basic 2007 would have been done using the "Medialess Licensing Kit."  This is where a trial of Office Professional 2007 would be installed on the computer with no CDs provided, and within 60 days the customer would have had the option to purchase a Medialess Licensing Kit that, depending upon the kit purchased, would have converted the Office Professional 2007 trial into a perpetually licensed installation of Office Basic 2007, Office Small Business 2007, or Office Professional 2007.  However, IIRC only small computer manufacturers were going to use this option--Dell would not have used this option.
