How can Office 2007 activate if it is not genuine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchase Office 2007 pro from eBay. I installed it, activated it and installed all of the updates, but it tells me that it is not genuine. So you can activate and update a non-genuine copy of office?

I would think you wouldn't be able to activate and update office if it was bogus, so what gives, is it an error?

  • Hello crt,

To give you the best advice we really need to see the report.

To answer your question, having an Invalid installation of Office does not prevent it from receiving security updates.

Having an Invalid installation of Office does prevent you from receiving nice-to-have content from the Office downloads site, what Microsoft calls "OGA-gated content."  There used to be much more gated content than there is now--used to be that clip art and templates were gated.

  • Hello Windoor,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->
    Office Status: 108 Invalid VLK
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 - 108 Invalid VLK

    OGA Version: N/A, 0x80070714
    Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002
    Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1_E2AD56EA-765-d003_E2AD56EA-766-0_E2AD56EA-134-80004005

The Office Professional Plus 2007 installed on your computer is an edition of Office that is properly sold only thru the Volume Licensing program to businesses, educational institutions and governmental agencies.  This installation was done with an invalid Product Key made by a pirating program known as a Key Generator.  The product key was NOT issued by Microsoft, making it Invalid.

If your use of the installed Office Professional Plus 2007 is in association with a business, educational institution, or governmental agency that might have a Volume Licensing Agreement with Microsoft, please report this nongenuine problem to your organization's IT support staff for further troubleshooting and resolution.

If you are an individual consumer, you should never have been sold Volume Licensing materials such as a VL disc, and you certainly should not have received an Invalid Product Key.  Quite often people purchase what is advertised and packaged as a retail license for Office Professional 2007, but all too often, the product they receive is a counterfeit Office package that installs a nongenuine copy of Office Professional Plus 2007.  This would seem to be the situation in your case.

Your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand either a full refund or to receive the genuine software you paid for.  If the seller refuses to help, please pursue whatever remedies are available to you thru the selling venue, your payment method (credit card, PayPal, etc), or the legal system in your area.

Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you decide to participate in the Office Genuine Offer, please initiate the process by clicking on the "Learn More Online" link shown in the nongenuine notices on your screen.

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installations which are nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installations of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

  • Hi, it says Office Status: 108 Invalid VLK, which I know means an invalid volume license key. So if the key is invalid why would it activate and let me install updates?

This is after the OGA installed. I am still able to receive updates

You will have to purchase a legitimate copy of Office and will have to put in a complaint to eBay and paypal.
The seller is sending me another copy of office 2007 and if it fails the MGA tool check, I'm going to demand my money back.

Thank you, my question has been answered.

  • Thanks for the information.

I installed this over my "legal" copy of Office 2000.

I opened an E-Bay case against him as his add stated "no refunds", just a replacement if disk was damaged.

He has since contacted me and has agreed to a refund. I'm a little concerned as the address he want's me to send it to is different from the return label on the package.

I will send it back as per his instructions and hope for the best.

  • Hello windoor,

Call eBay or PayPal customer service (depending upon what you used) to make sure you are sending it to where eBay and PayPal want it to go, not the seller.  The seller could give you a bogus address to waste time off the 45 day clock.  And absolutely, positively be sure to use an online viewable means of delivery confirmation.

  • Just a word of advice, you will not find a legal copy of Microsoft Office 2007 Professional on eBay for $135 - $175 brand new. It will most likely be a very good pirated copy from China.

  • I got a good legit copy just not from eBay, but it can be found. Just because it comes for China doesn't mean it is pirated. Just my 2 cents.
