Unauthorized sw installed error AFTER passing windows genuine validation RRS feed

Unfortunately, I am back after your suggestion in my previous post allowed me to pass the validation:(.  I was working on my computer this evening and I got a pop up that MS had installed something new on my system and my system would be rebooted. It then started a countdown. I delayed the reboot until I could finish what I was doing (luckily). After rebooting the machine, I got the same message I had before about unauthorized software installed on my system and I had to do the validation again... WHY would I have to validate something I already did??? Any way, I went ahead and sure enough it failed and I am not able to do anything on my system (no start button, no print options, no desktop icons).  Here is the diagnostic results if it can assist.  Also, I have NOT installed anthing on the machine once I got it fixed with your help, as I didn't want to risk this happening again.

  • Scrapmom,

Also please try the following. Should this not work then more than likely you will have to perform a complete reinstallation of Vista onto your system. Did you receive a Recovery Software Disc with the computer @ the time of purchase? If not some manufacturers have a hidden partion located on the computer hard drive. Also you can call Hewlett Packard and request them to send you the recover media so you can have it on hand. Now should you need to reinstall Vista please call their technical support @ (800) 474-6836 and visit the following sites

In your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report it shows the error code "Online Validation Code: 0x80070426". This means that the Software Licensing Service has stopped. Windows Vista uses this service to check itself and confirm it is Genuine. When the service is stopped, Windows Vista is unable to confirm its own Genuine status and may show Genuine or Non-Genuine. The fact that the Service has stopped is also, most likely, the cause of other issues you may be experiencing (such as not having access to the Control Panel).

Please try the first set of steps and if it does not resolve the issue, move on to the next set.

The first sets of steps are how to set the Software Licensing Service to start at each Windows Vista Start-up.

    1. Click Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  services.msc

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard

    3. The Services window should now open

    4. Scroll down to Software Licensing, then right-click on it and select Properties

    5. Under the General tab, click Stop button.

    6. Set the Startup Type to Automatic, and then click Apply

    7. Next, under Service Status, click Start button.

    8. Last, restart your computer.

The second set of steps is the Manual steps to Force Start the Software Licensing Service. Once you type the net start slsvc command and hit Enter, if you receive any error, then, for some reason, Windows Vista is not processing the command correctly and the issue is larger than just a Software Licensing problem. In which case, I would suggest contacting Windows Vista support below: http://support.microsoft.com

If you have access to the Start button:

    1) Click Start button

    2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

If you do not have access to the Start button:

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

  • Good Morning Scrapmom :-)

The core to your particular issue centers on the line in your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report which reads:

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\gdi32.dll[6.0.6000.16643]

This line means that the critical system file gdi32.dll has either

    a)     Been tampered/modified/become corrupt to the point that its Signature Hash no longer matches the Signature Hash listed in Windows Vista's System Catalog.

    Or

    b)     Been updated but the file's Signature Hash was not updated, in Windows Vista's System Catalog to reflect the updated file's new Signature Hash.

Windows Vista compares a Critical System file's Signature Hash with the Signature Hash listed in its System Catalog to determine if that Critical System file has been tampered with. When this happens, depending on the file that has been tampered, Windows Vista may show as Genuine or non-genuine, but either way, Windows Vista won't Validate correctly and may also exhibit other strange behavior.

There are no Updates that contain gdi32.dll so possible cause b) is unlikely.

To resolve your issue, we need to replace or repair the file so its Signature Hash matches what is listed in Windows Vista System Catalog. I can provide a couple of suggestions to do this:

    A)        Install Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en)

SP1 may contain an updated copy of this file which would overwrite the bad copy and resolve the issue. (Disregard this step since you have already tried SP1 and it failed to install.)

    B)    Repair Windows Vista using System Restore:

    1) Reboot Windows Vista into Safe Mode

    2) Go to Control Panel

    3) On the left hand side of the Control Panel window, click Classic View

    4) Double-click Backup and Restore Center

    5) On the left hand side of the window, click Repair Windows using system restore

    6) Select Choose Different Restore Point, put a check in the box that says Show restore points older than 5 days, select the restore point that corresponds to the date before you first noticed the issue.

    7) Click Next button.

    8) Reboot back into Normal mode

    9) Windows Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM)

If neither of these solutions resolves your issue, the last resort, that I can provide, is to reinstall Windows Vista. But before you do that, create a (no cost) support request below:

Thank you and let us know if this resolves what you are experiencing.
