I bought Office Ultimate but it is not working; I feel like this should be a simple fix RRS feed

  • Question

  • One day I clicked on OneNote and I heard the dreaded "bing".  The bing told me that the program was not installed for the specific user and to run setup to install it.  I found this puzzling because I had been using OneNote et. al. for months without this bing ever popping up.  Being a grad student, I had no time to find any discs, etc to run setup.  Primarily because I had no idea what the heck the bing was telling me.  SO I visited TheUltimateSteal and downloaded Office Ultimate.  60 bucks, no big deal.  So when I installed it, thinking it would rectify everything, it did not.  I uninstalled the office programs through one of Microsoft's FixIt programs.  Then I reinstalled Ultimate.  But that did not work either.  At some point, I clicked on Office and I got the "Not genuine" message.   HELP!  I need office!  Running the diagnostics program,  it seems that I have two offices?  I find this odd because I thought I deleted the previous Office through Microsoft FixIt 50154.

  • Hello SalaamB,

I think your instincts to uninstall the previous Office were good, but it looks like that did not quite happen the way we wanted it to.

Were I in your situation, I would uninstall Office 2007 Ultimate from the Control Panel>Programs applet, then restart.  Then I'd run the Fixit to let it try to remove whatever remnants are left behind, then restart.  Finally, I'd go thru the manual steps in this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/ to be certain that all has been cleaned out.  Then I'd restart once more and try again.

  • Hi Dan,

I cannot activate the product from within the applications because once I open them up, a pop up immediately comes up saying that the application is not installed for the current user.  I am the only user on my computer.  I had used Microsoft FixIt 50154 to delete the previous Office Programs before installing Ultimate.  When I installed ultimate, it asked for my product key (which I obtained directly from Microsoft) and it proceeded in the installation.  But after installation, the product is not working.

  • Dan,

Thank you so much for your assistance.  It took me a majority of yesterday in between (and a little during) classes to go through the process but it was worth it in the end.  I had a problem in trying to delete msoxmlmf.dll when I was deleting the OFFICE12 folder.  I kept getting a prompt that it was being used by another program.  I hope it doesn't give me problems later.

I have pasted my updated diagnostic below.  Let me know if it seems okay.  Thanks.
