Replace hard drive of used computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • I searched the forum and didn't see this question answered.  I purchased a used Toshiba laptop online.  The person who sold it to me said he lost the original Toshiba-issued Win XP Pro disk but the validation key is on the bottom of the computer.  I verified that the number is legitimate.  The hard drive on the laptop is small and it seems as if it is going to fail so I plan to replace it.

I have a legitimate, unopened version of Win XP Pro Upgrade (not the full version, the upgrade).  Can I install the new harddrive on the laptop and use the combination of the Win XP Upgrade and the legitimate validation key on the sticker on the bottom of the computer to execute a full, fresh install of XP Pro?

  • The OEM Windows XP product key affixed to the Toshiba computer is only valid with Toshiba's recovery media.  You'll need to contact Toshiba and request the proper Windows XP recovery disk.
