Suddenly Prompted with: Product Key I entered is invalid RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought my HP laptop a little over two years ago, and Vista came pre-installed. A couple days ago a window popped up saying the Vista product key I entered is invalid - it gives me the options to buy a new key, enter a different key, or contact HP. I tried to enter my product key again but was told it was invalid.I have not made any major changes or updates to my computer lately, so don't know why this is happening.

    Please help!

  • There may be corruption in the Licensing store. The solution is to recreate the store.
Please try the below steps to recreate the Store files.  This may resolve the issue.

    1) Open an Internet Explorer Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate. Be sure to use the Product key on the sticker on the side or bottom of the PC (some laptops may have the sticker located in the battery compartment) To Activate, please use the Activate by Phone option.

Once complete, please post back with a new MGADiag report

  • You can get started with phone activation by typing "slui.exe 4"
(w/o the quotes) in the Start Search box in the Start Menu and pressing
    Enter.
Select the phone activation process which takes about 6 minutes.

Note: Type in the Windows Vista 25-character product key that is affixed to your HP computer.

  • I called and entered the product key. It said it is not recognized and not valid.

I restarted my computer and am now getting a message in the bottom right corner of my desktop that says "Build 6002 This copy of Windows is not genuine."
