Do files remain usable is harddrive is removed? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone,

My WHS server consists of 2 drives. 1 120GB start-up drive and 1 1TB Data drive. I've placed some 600GBs of photos, music & movies in the shared folders. Obiously you can't decide where WHS puts these files on the disks, i just dumped them in shared folder for easy accessibility.

If I decide to remove the 1TB drive via -> Uninstall Drive in the software, does this make the files unusable? Say I wanted to put this drive temporarily in another pc so i can check out my media there, as it would be with a simple drive with folders, would it be possible? Or am I doomed to need a backup of these files on an external drive?

    Thanks in advance,

  • If you try to remove the drive using the WHS console you will get a message there's not enough space to remove the drive without files being lost; when you remove a drive in that way WHS by default will try and copy the files on the drive to other drives in the storage pool.

You can however view the files on another system; Power down the server, disconnect the drive (leave sata cable connected to motherboard / controller), connect drive to other system, all the files are in a hidden folder DE in the root of the drive (you may need to enable view hidden files and folders on the other system). Please note, do NOT change or move any files or folders on the disk, do not boot your server without the disk, when you reconnect the disk make sure you connect it to the same SATA port.
