Communicator and Outlook Converstion History RRS feed

  • Question

  • Using Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2003.

I'm trying to understand how this works.

I logged into a machine and opened Communicator. I did not open Outlook.

I started a conversation, ended it, closed Communicator and logged off.

I logged on to another machine. I did not open Communicator. I opened Outlook and the conversation was in my Conversation History folder.

    How did it get there?

    Thanks

  • You can configure this in the Options in Communicator

Go to Tools -> Options and open the Personal Tab

In the Personal Information Manager section you can choose which Information Manager to use

And you can configure wether you want to save your conversations in the conversation history folder

You can do the same with call logs

Thank you for your answer. I have it configured through a GPO.

I'm looking for the nuts and bolts of how that conversation got into the folder when the conversation was created on antother machine that did not have Outlook running. And then when I logged on to the other machine, I didn't open Communicator ,yet when I opened Outlook , the converstion was already there? How?

  • That is because Communicator logs into Exchange Mailbox and Stores the converations in there

Outlook does not need to be running

Are you saying that Communicator creates a MAPI connection to Exchange if Outlook is not open? Or regardless if Outlook is open?

  • It actually uses Outlook components to do the integration

But Outlook does not need to be running

  • One more question:

If Outlook is not installed, does Communicator have the ability to make the malbox connection to Exchange anyway?

    Thanks

  • Good question I haven't tried that but it might work if you do have a mapi profile configured without Outlook
