MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-667) Configuring Microsoft SharePoint 2010 | Build SP2010-WFE1 VM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone,

I want to follow the training detailled in the book : MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-667) Configuring Microsoft SharePoint 2010.

    A CD-ROM - companion media - is supplied.

I have got an issue while building the lab environment.

I have followed the steps described in the document "Lab Environment Build Guide.docx" present on the companion media.

The lab environment is made up of 2 virtual machines respectively named CONTOSO-DC and SP2010-WFE1.

I have created the 2 virtual machines by using VirtualBox.

My 2 VMs are executed on the same host and are connected to the same internal virtual network.

I have got my issue at the step : Configure SP2010-WFE1.

I have executed the batch file 03-SP2010-WFE1-Initialize.bat on the SP2010-WFE1 VM.

The batch file contains the following statement to join the VM to the contoso.com domain :

    netdom join %COMPUTERNAME% /Domain:contoso.com /UserD:CONTOSO\Administrator /PasswordD:Pa$$w0rd

The statement failed with the following error message :

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Can you please give me some help ?

  • Hi,

The script assumes that the Administrator for the Contoso domain has 'Pa$$w0rd' as password. Have you set this password on the Administrator account in AD?

You also have to make share that SP2010-WFE1 knows where to find CONTOSO-DC in DNS to resolve the domain join request.

Have you already deployed the AD services on CONTOSO-DC? You will need to setup the domain first before you can join.

It can help to add the IP number from CONTOSO-DC to the DNS servers listed in the IP v4 settings for the network adapter.

    Thank you for your reply.

I have already performed the steps named "Configure CONTOSO-DC" and "Promote CONTOSO-DC to a Domain Controller".

At the latter step I have installed Active Directory Domain Services on CONTOSO-DC VM.

I have typed "Pa$$w0rd" in the Password and "Confirm Password" textboxes on the "Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password" page.

The batch file I have tried to executed at step "Configure SP2010-WFE1" contains the following command :

    netsh dnsclient set dnsservers name="%Connection_Name%" source=static address=%IP_DNS% register=primary validate=no 1> nul:

This command is to specify the DNS server used by SP2010-WFE1 VM and the command has been successfully executed.

The IP_DNS variable contains the CONTOSO-DC VM IPV4 address.

  • You can try to manually add the Server to the domain without the script.

Can you ping CONTOSO-DC from a command prompt on the SP2010-WFE1 server?

  • Thank you for your reply.

I have tried to add manually SP2010-WFE1 VM to the contoso.com domain but I have got the same error :

Logon failure : unknown username or bad password.

I can ping CONTOSO-DC from a command prompt on SP2010-WFE1 VM.

  • Hi,

You commented "  have typed "Pa$$w0rd" in the Password and "Confirm Password" textboxes on the "Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password" page."

You need to make sure the Administrator user account in Active Directory Users & Computers is reset to Pa$$w0rd.

The restore mode administrator is a different password then the password for the Administrator user account.
