  • Question

  • I lost my product key for the Vista upgrade from XP on my new PC from Dell. Dell says to contact MS. I continued the installation but the software says I have 17 days to activate. Please advise.

  • How to replace lost, broken, or missing Microsoft software or hardware

  • Thanks for your suggestion. The issue seems to be that the software came from an OEM upgrade via Dell and MS claims no responsibility for OEM products. By the way, Dell claims no responsibility either. Of course, it's MS that requires the key. I'm screwed.

  • Just I thought, I contacted MS as you suggested. They could not help me and said Dell should provide key. Dell has said it is MS's problem. I am screwed.

  •  hmm.. geuss you and I are in the same boat as the saying goes, my advice is if you have a lagit (oem) version of xp, untell then save up the money and buy it at directon or 4surecomputers or some lagit place. my product key was probably defaced at dell, not trying to do any finger pointing or starting a flaming post but it's "pass the buck".

  • You can use special software to recover your Windows key. Most of them support some versions of Windows and some other Microsoft products. Also there is a products like "Recover Keys" ( http://recover-keys.com/ ) that support all Windows versions and 300+ of other major software packages.
