Will OneCare Backup still work after June 2010? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I can understand why malware protection and online backup, which require central Microsoft services to function, would stop working after the end-of-support date for OneCare, but will the central backup function continue to work after this date?  I realize that you would not be able to get any support for it, but that may be OK if it is working fine.

    TIA,

  • When OneCare expires and can no longer be renewed, all functionality will shut down eventually with the exception of the protection, which simply will stop updating. So, backup would no longer work, nor could you access the settings to change them.

The June 2010 is theoretical. OneCare will stop being sold or renewed by the end of June 2009 and installations will probably be blocked some time thereafter, probably the end of 2009. So, a functioning copy that is subscribed will continue to work until it expires, which would likely be the end of 2010.
