Office Pro 2003 & Publisher 2003 won't validate RRS feed

  • Question

  • Office won't validate - I have a MAPS subscription and products are activated (MGA says they're not).  I have previously been validated but a recent update won't now.  Here's the details from the diagnostic:

(Arrrgg! Updates and validations shouldn't be this much of a hassle.)

BTW, I don't use Outlook and but when I try to open the program it keeps locking up whether I choose to upgrade the Outlook Connector or not.  All other Office programs open fine and indicate they're activated.  I hope this helps with the diagnostics.

  • Hi Richard,

Thank you for your diagnostic output.  After review, it appears that it's your Microsoft Office Professional 2003 Edition that is not activated.  Can you locate your product key for Office Pro 2003 and open one of the applications such as Word and activate it?

If that does not work, try this:

    1) Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\
    2) Delete the data.dat file.
    3) This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA).
    4) Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word and ACTIVATE it.
    5) After product activation is successful, let’s try revalidating (this is the OGA part; Office Genuine Advantage):

    Thanks,

  • Thank you for your post. There is nothing you can see directly to get your product key from the machine. There are however, 3rd party applications available that would be able to do this. We are unable to recommend any of them since it would be against our policy. A well phrased search in your favorite search engine should provide you the applet you are looking for.

  • Hi Michelle,

Thanks for the help.  The product had already been activated so I tried the deleting of the data.dat file and its backup.  No change.  So I deleted the opa11.dat and its backup then opened up Word and started the activation process.  Office Pro now passes but other products do not: Visio, Publisher, and Front Page.  Note that after activation there is no longer a data.dat file only the opa11.dat file.

Publisher thinks that it is already activated (OGA thinks not), Visio and Front Page won't allow activation because the licence is used up (probably from the two previous times that I've activated the product on this computer).

So, what do I do now?

  • Richard,

Richard you mentioned deleting the OPA11.bak file. This is not suppose to be deleted. Have you tried to activate each product separately vs. just activating MS Office Professional? If it isn't too much trouble I would like for you to uninstall each of your Office products. Below are instructions for deleting the OPA11 file.

    OPA11 Deletion Guidance

. Click Start, click Run, type C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data, and then click OK.

NOTE:  The application data file may be hidden. Use the Tools drop down menu and follow:>Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show Hidden Files and Folders to show the folder. Please re-hide the files once you have completed all the steps.

    2. Right-click the Opa11.dat file, and then click Delete.

IMPORTANT:  DO NOT DELETE THE OPA11.bak FILE.

    3. Close the folder.

    4. Start an Office 2003 program to start the Office 2003 Activation Wizard.

Attached below is a Knowledge Base (KB) article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301. This will allow you to download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and explain detailed information. Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and uninstall all Microsoft Office programs on your computer, then reinstall Microsoft Office using the genuine MS Office installation CD and product key. Install each of your other suite products and activate each separately (MS office should activate by activating one product within the suite).

If you are still having issues, can you do the following?
    1) Logon to the PC that is experiencing the notifications as a user with “ADMINISTRATOR” privileges.
    2) Download the tool: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 click RUN.
    3) When the tool loads, click “CONTINUE”.
    4) Is the “RESOLVE” button available? If so, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool repair the issue.
    5) From the Windows tab, click the COPY button.
    6) Please reply back to this post and PASTE the entire results into reply of this post.
We can take a look at it and offer you some suggestions as to how to resolve this issue. Some activation problems indicate your license file is corrupted for Microsoft Office 2003 or for Microsoft Office XP. If the license file is corrupted, you cannot resolve the problem by removing and then reinstalling the Office product. The license file is not removed when you remove the Office product. Additionally, the file is not overwritten when you reinstall the Office product. Another symptom of a corrupted license file is a failure to successfully pass Office Genuine Advantage validation. If the license file is corrupted, use the following methods to delete the license file for Office 2003.

Did this work?  I look forward to the outcome at your earliest opportunity.

    Thank you
    Stephen MS

  • Stephen,

The only way I could get the activation wizard to run was by deleting the OPA11.bak file.  Deleting the data.dat, the data.bak, and the OPA11.dat files was not sufficient to trigger the wizard.  Once the wizard ran, then there was a new OPA11.bak file so no problem.  Thanks for the detailed instructions on how to delete the files <grin> apparently I needed them.

Yes, Stephen, I have tried activating each product separately, and as noted in my previous post, Office Pro is now activated and passes OGA.  The problem no longer lies with Office but with other Office suite products, specifically:

MS Front Page - Inspect the two diagnostic reports that I have posted here - the first one showed Front Page as <100> LegitResult, and the second as <101> LegitResult indicating that it is not activated.  Last week the online activation wizard declined the key as having been used too many times.  I cannot remember the exact wording and now the wizard cannot find an internet connection (FYI, the problem is not with the internet connection as I'm posting this via an internet connection on the supposedly afflicted machine).

MS Visio Professional - Similar to above: was activated but now is not and activation declined.

MS Publisher - I click Help/Activate Product and a message box appears stating "This product has already been activated"

I have downloaded the cleanup tool and read the instructions. I am reluctant to spend hours re-installing all Office software (especially since I should not be having this problem with passing OGA anyway).  Reading the diagnostic report indicates that all products are legitimate (the "LegitResult" tag) and and only some are simply not activated (the "<101>" value).  Can the uninstall/cleanup be limited to the three products that are having a problem?  Or, better yet, is there another way around this?  I have no problem following instructions and getting into the registry to make necessary changes.

I have run the diagnostic again.  There is not a "Resolve" button.  Here is the diagnostic:

  • Richard,

I am  still reviewing your problem with my colleagues as well as researching more documentation about Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) controls process. Please give me more time and I will get back with you. I wanted to let you know we are working on your concern.  Have a great evening.

  • Thank you.  Tonight I successfully activated Visio and Front Page via MS telephone personnel.  I ran the validation tool and now Office passes.  Note that I did nothing to MS Publisher and now it too passes but still has a <101> value in LegitResult, yet prior to Visio and Front Page being activated it did not.  I'll post the diagnostic so that you can further track down the cause of this problem.

It would be nice if I did not have to go through this again...

Thanks Michelle and Stephen for your help.  And I'd like to know if you track down the problem and find a solution...

  • Richard,

Could you please file a service request with Microsoft Product Support:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=52029. Once you have done this, please reply back to this post and provide the SR # generated by the service request. Please let me know if you would be willing to do this. Here you will be asked to provide your 5x5 product key (xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx). Please do not post a product key here.  Once we get the key we can take a look at it and tell more about your issue.

    Thank you Richard

  • Hi Stephen,

I've followed the link and signed up for a service request.  Several files have been relinquished to MS in the process.  I have been provided a confirmation number: 1032467679.  I'm instructed to wait 1 business day for a response.

How do I locate the 5x5 product key?  The product ID number in the "About MS Word" is (xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx) format.  Slightly different but same number of digits and not the same as the alpha-numeric key entered to activate the product.  Is the alpha-numeric key data kept on the hard drive somewhere that I can access?  The reason I ask is because I have several keys from the MAPS subscription but I did not record which key went to which computer and I would like to backtrack and record them now.

Thanks for staying in touch and following through with this...

    Rick...

  • Thank you for your post. There is nothing you can see directly to get your product key from the machine. There are however, 3rd party applications available that would be able to do this. We are unable to recommend any of them since it would be against our policy. A well phrased search in your favorite search engine should provide you the applet you are looking for.
