My key is valid but Vista says it isn't RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have had this problem before but somehow it fixed itself and I don't know how to do it now. I would have been able to fix this via using the automated phone service but the IDs installation number all go like this:

    1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9

Now that's not right. I have tried all options available to me, except buying a new key, and nothing works. I know mine is valid. It came pre-installed on this machine.

It happened before but it fixed itself, (a month or so later I had the same problem but was able to fix it as I was given proper numbers that time around). And now it's done it again.
I am able to have full access to this computer so any help would be appreciated.

  • Hello LittleLadyRed,

It appears that Vista's Licensing Store may be corrupt of unreadable for some reason.  Please try the below steps to recreate a new Store.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS
