Unauthorised Copy of Windows Professional

Question
-
I have had this copy of Windows XP professional for several years. It is an upgrade retail copy of the software. I have successfully installed it on previous computers but on trying to install it on my latest machine I received an unauthorised product key message and the system refused attempts to re enter the numbers for validation.
I know it is a genuine and valid copy. Seems the act of re installing has caused the problem. How do I get it authorised?

Hello Greg,
This Key has been Blocked from Activation but Not from Validation.
There is no reason given for the Block but since the key has been activated 55+ times, I suspect it was an Automatic Blocked applyed by the system due to the excessive activations.
(Note: I have seached the internet and the key Does Not appear to be leaked)
This is not a Validation related problem (since the key is not blocked from Validation) so the only thing I can suggest is try Activating by Phone again and see what they can do for you. (You may need to ask for a manager or supervisor).
Sorry I couldn't be more help,

From the PID, it looks like this is a valid upgrade copy - did you use the 'correct' upgrade procedures to install it, or did you do a clean install? (It's so long since I did one, I can't even remember whether it's possible to do a totally clean install with XP Pro upgrade media!....)The only other thing I can think of is that you now have to activate by phone (which happens after a Key has been used a few times) - which shouldn't be a problem, but if it rejects the activation, phone back and do not answer the request for a service number (or key 0) - this should force an operator to respond, and they can deal with your problem.--

Hi, Thanks for responding. I have gone along the phone route. In the past they asked a few questions and once satisfied they gave me the necessary codes to validate the software. This time they simply say it is coming up as unauthorised and refer me to a website that will allegedly help me. Sadly all it does is tell me to get my software activated before it can assess whether it is a legitimate copy of windows..
I went back to the phone but drew a blank...
Any further ideas ?
Thanks
Greg

Not a clue, I'm afraid. :(Darin Smith, the Forum Owner, will be back tomorrow (Monday, Redmond time), and will be able to read more into the report than me - and may be able to discover what the status of the key is through his tools, or through 'channels'.Wait for him - or one of the other forum answerers with more experience than I - and see what he can suggest.Good Luck!

Hello Greg23Clark,
Assuming that you have fully installed the product and when attempting to activate you are being informed that the product key is showing as unauthorized, aand getting this from both the automated system and a live activation representative.
As Noel posted, our man Darin of Microsoft will be able to research the Details of the product key and if we're lucky he'll be able to share some details as to why it has become unauthorized.
There have been a few situations where a legitimate product key holder has been locked out of the use of their Windows software because their previously legitimate product key, thru no fault of their own, was compromised, copied, or somehow it was duped by one of those KeyGens. After which the key was abused, got onto the Microsoft radar screen as an abused key and was subsequently blocked.
In these cases the original legitimate key holders have been asked by the Microsoft staff here to take digital pictures or photocopies of their retail materials to include the all-important Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) which proves they are the original key holder, send them into Microsoft for verification, and then they have been given a new Genuine product key.
Assuming such steps are warranted in your case, that may be how this will play out.

Hi,
Thanks for the info and thanks in advance for any further insight Darin may be able to give.
I have had no trouble validating this software in the past.. it seems Microsoft have had a change of heart or process that has led to my difficulties.
Thanks again
Greg
