Trial version of WHS only show 30 days RRS feed

  • Question

  • I downloaded WHS from Microsoft and installed in on my server.  It is only showing 30 days instead of 120 that is listed on the website.  Also, can I buy a key for this version in order to activate or do I have to purchase and reinstall WHS on my server?

Answers

  • Until you have obtained a product key and activated the software (as detailed clearly on the download page) you have only the unactivated 30 day trial period that most Microsoft consumer operating systems offer.

As for licensing the 120 day evaluation version, no. You will be required to perform a server reinstallation to get a fully licensed version installed. See this FAQ post for more details.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

You need to activate the trial in order to obtain the full 120 days.

    From the download page:

    5. You may now use the Evaluation Edition for 30 days. To use the Evaluation Edition for the full 120-day period, you need to register at the Windows Home Server Connect site and acquire a product key for the Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition software.
Uninstall notice: The Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition expires 120 days after installation, if activated. Please refer to the product documentation before installing the fully licensed version of Windows Home Server.

If you wish to upgrade to a full copy, a server reinstallation will be necessary as this copy is timebombed to expire after a 120 days. Entering the new PID will not prevent this; however, a server reinstall is not as bad as it sounds. Your data will remain intact. The reinstall only wipes the sys partition. Please see this FAQ.
