Backup to removable hard drive not up to snuff? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Windows Live One Care backing up my vista ultimate desktop to a removable USB hard drive.  After the backup I want to remove the drive and take it off site.  "Safely Remove Hardware" continually says the drive is in use and cannot be removed.  There is no activity visible on the drive.  The only way I can "safely" remove the drive is to power off the computer.  What could I be missing here - or does a removable drive become non-removable after a backup takes place?  Then after I replace the drive with power off, Windows Live One Care no longer recognizes that a drive is installed that can be target for the next backup.  I need to re-configure the backup and select the 2nd identical hard drive in order to get my next backup.  Is this normal?

    TIA - Charlie

  • The drive in use situation wouldn't be normal and I don't believe it would be due to OneCare, though I could be wrong.

However, once you connect a different drive (you mention selecting the 2nd identical drive) you must reconfigure backup. OneCare backup is not designed for rotating destination devices out like I think you are wanting to do. It is simplistic in that it expects the drive to be connected to the PC when backup runs.
