Unfortunately your Windows Product Key is from a Blocked MSDN account.
    It will never activate.
Your machine appears to be based on a retail motherboard?

Your other options are to purchase a legal Win7 package from a reputable store (NOT eBay this time!), and do a clean install with that.
You could also (the most expensive option) purchase a legal Win 7 Ultimate  package, and use the Key from that to make your current install genuine - but I would still recommend a clean install.

They will explain what happened and how - and how to avoid it happening again, and some of the actions you can take now, and in the future if it does happen.

  • Thanks for your help Noel.  I built the computer myself.  It was running ubuntu until I "upgraded" to 7.  I purchased the software from World Software, also doing business as Euro Soft if anyone else has run into them or is considering using them be aware.

I had downloaded from them as I was trying to make the computer wife friendly quickly before going on deployment and they had immediate downloads.  At that time I figured if it didn't validate I'd have my bank block the transaction, but as it inititially was good I figured I was all set.  My bad for using what is apparently a bad vendor, but I do wish there better accounting of the keys initially though so I would have known in July and not 6 months later.

Alas I suppouse I should start saving up.

As a point on information there are only three companies presently authorised to offer Key+download of ANY MS  product. they are MS itself, Digital River, and Dell (who as far as I am aware, can only offer Office product this way).
ANYONE else who sells a Key for Windows without *accompanying* disks, is a counterfeiter/scammer/thief.
Office products are slightly different, in that a Trial download is available from MS, and that can be activated fully using a KeyCard. - but the scammers are getting onto those as well, I suspect (although I don't recall seeing any evidence in these forums yet)

  • I see.  I think I'm going to order an OEM cd from newegg  or the like and wipe/reinstall when I get paid.  I'm sad I'll have to reinstall all my information, but hopefully I won't have any issues reregistering my Microsoft Office programs (which were purchased from Microsoft directly).

I'd really recommend buying Retail - it's more expensive, but at least you have the option to move the OS if the computer blows up, which you would not have, if you bought OEM.
OEM licenses are locked to the first motherboard on which they are activated, and cannot be moved except under very tight conditions (and a blown-up computer isn't one of them).
Your motherboard is over 3 years old - and could (unfortunately) die the day after you activated the new OS - then with an OEM license, you're stuffed, with a Retail one, you just need to replace the motherboard, possibly run a repair install, re-activate, and away you go again.

  • Makes sense.  Thanks again!

Edit: Then again I may have to chance it.  Not sure I can afford Retail.  I'll have to hope for the best.

    Thanks for your help Noel.

  • Ugh.  Till then I'll have to go back to Ubuntu, which means I'll lose zune access.  Suppouse I might cancell my account to pay for the software and I'll have to skip the upgrade to the hd7.  Joy.

  • Have you tried gouging a refund out of your vendor yet? - threats of police/FBI action can produce surprising repsonses :)
