Think I'm Giving Up on Mesh - Hasn't Worked in Weeks RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • OK, I give up. I can't trust Live Mesh anymore. I have a shared database on my Live Desktop that was initially shared with my notebook and desktop. But since about a week before the update - which was a complete mess - neither PC has synced w/ Live Desktop.

At this point the database shows with three different sizes - by quite a bit - in my desktop PC's Shared Folder, notebook PC's Shared Folder, and Live Desktop Shared Folder. I don’t even want them to sync by now; how would that work? Other than to obvously lose data on all three devices. I have no idea what would try to sync if it started working again, and how much data would be lost.

I know that Live Mesh is not even at a beta level yet, and that should have been a loud bell ringing when I started with this mess. THe documentation, as sparse as it is, doesn’t help at all in clarifying how the synchronization process is supposed to work. But this thing isn't working as it is "supposed" to work anyway.

Hopefully it will not completely damage either of my systems when I try to getit the heck off my computers.

  • Hey Jim,

I can really see your frustration and anger with Live Mesh.  I have felt that way myself more than once. But the benefits that I have had with using Live Mesh have more than out weighed the frustrations.  I am a web design consultant and I work out of my home-office most of the time.  Monday, Wednesday, and a half day on Friday I am on-site in a client's office.  Having the ability to automatically synch and share files between my home-office systems and the client systems has been a real life saver for me.  I must tell you though that I would never had even tried to use Live Mesh for a whole database system.  DBMSs are just to complex for none-realtime sharing.  Even using something like Windows Server 2003 / 2008 requires special programing to keep databased synch'd.  I don't know what you are trying to accomplish with YOUR Live Mesh, but maybe you can try using other document types (Excel workbooks, Word Docs, images, html pages, etc) and see if it might not work better with those files.  As Live Mesh gets better and better over time (and it will, it already has since I've started using it) then support for DBMSs will improve.  Your input is better as a contributor than just as some one who walked away.  Well, that's all I have to say.

  • Hey J-Mac,

I can understand your frustration with things not going the way you want them to go.  But if your seeing different files in folders that you have set to be synchronizing with Live Mesh, I'd really like to better understand what broke.

If you could, on your PC and Notebook, if you haven't uninstalled Live Mesh yet, please send me your logs.

Start, All programs, Live Mesh, Collect Live Mesh Logs.

It will put a cab file on your desktop called: LiveMeshLogs.cab

If you could mail those logs to me at: LMPrev@microsoft.com so we can see what went wrong and where I'd like to have the opportunity to repair the problem for you.

    Thanks!
