windows activation loop

  sony vaio desktop - windows xp - about four years old... no problems until cursor went crazy and kept ----------- like crazy... tried everything to fix it... suddenly it stopped doing it but now when we boot up, we get the box saying that windows needs to be activated,,, do you want to activate now?,,,, click yes and another box opens saying windows is already activated... we are unable to open in safe mode each time we try... any suggestions?
