Vista Validation errors in Event Manager RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a valid license, but I continually get events logged:

    • Security-Licensing-SLC Event ID: 1024  "Hardware has changed"
    • Security-Licensing-SLC Event ID: 1025  "Grace period has been started. Grace days=3  Grace type=4"
    • Security-Licensing-SLC Event ID: 12305 "Genuine state set to genuine for application Id *******-****-****-983e-d6ec3f16059f"   (---astericks inserted by me---)
    • Security-Licensing-SLC Event ID: 12304 "Successfully acquired genuine ticket for template Id *******-****-****-983e-d6ec3f16059f"
Now, when I look at my activation status:
    "Windows is activated"

I started getting these when I updated the NVidia drivers (ethernet and RAID) for my system. I had to phone into licensing support to get "reactivated", which apparently worked. However, I still get the above events logged all the time.

When I run the diagnostic tool, I get:

  • Hi Bubbyba,

You may need to reactivate by phone, after installing the Bios and Drivers, but it should not be a problem. You will just need to talk to the Activation Rep and explain that you updated some hardware and they will activate you. It should only take a few minutes.

As for the Event log entries, I am unsure if this is expected behavior or not and I will try to find out, but I do not see any Genuine vs. Non-Genuine issues in your Diagnostic report, so you should be fine.

    Thanks,

    Darin

  • Hi buddyba,

Can you give me an idea of how often you see this in your event logs? (at every bootup? when you Validate online? every couple of minutes?)  Other then in your event logs, are you seeing any error message?

    Thanks,

    Darin Smith

  • It happens everytime I login, and then about every 2 hours after that. Other than these messages, there are no other errors that I can see. However, I need to update my bios and RAID drivers, but I am a little concerned that I will have to call in to get my license "re-validated" again...

    Thanks--

  • Hi Darin,

I found this post via Google, as I've also appear to have the same issue.

In my Event log, I see event 1024 ("Hardware has changed") and then 1025 ("Grace period has been started. Grace day=3 Grace type=4.").  This is even though my copy of Vista says it is Activated in the UI.

Running the diagnostic tool, I get:

My copy of Vista is an OEM, installed by the place that built the PC for me.  I did have to call the Validation phone line recently following updating my BIOS, as it wouldn't work directly from within Windows. (not sure if this is related to the event log message I get).

One other point, is that I get these event log messages when I wake my PC from sleep.  (it's actually a problem with using my Xbox w/ the Media Center when the PC is asleep that is the ultimate problem I'm looking into; I'd read on MS Support site that using the Xbox can have problems if the copy of Windows isn't Activated, which got me looking into this...)

This could be a blind alley, but thought I'd check

    Cheers,

    Neil
