"Failed to start live mesh" message

Question
-
I cannot get live mesh working on my xp laptop. I continually get the "failed to start live mesh" error after installing/reinstalling. However, when I create a new user account, live mesh will install and I can log into my mesh (which currently has 3 other computers). What am I doing wrong and why isn't there any solutions on the internet?

I dont suppose you have or have had an apostrophe in the login name on your comouter have you? I had the error message too when I tried to install on my parents computer so I serached this forum and read that there's an incompatibilty with Mesh and apostrophes in your username on the computer.
The only solution given was to create a new profile and just move everything accross to the new profile. You cant just change the profile name using the control panel as that does not change everything in the system, just what you see in the wecome screen and at teh top of the start menu.Monday, July 28, 2008 1:53 PM -
yes, my profile had an apostrophe in it. i changed it through the registry and thought i had it beat. where else could it be sticking?
until then, whats the easiest way to move everything over to my user account that seems to be working?

I just had to copy all my parents files from one account to the other. Luckily I had only just perfromed a fresh install of the OS so I knew where all the files where located.Wednesday, July 30, 2008 11:34 PM

I've got a vista SP1 machine that installs live mesh just fine, but it refuses to start. 2 possibilities I can think of are I am running framework 3.5 SP1 beta or the fact I have a hamachi VPN program running all the time. I have had a bit of a poke around in some log files, but they don't tell me too much? Where to look for detailed error information.
The logs just seem to have the following

Hi all, I would just like to let you all know that I was experiencing the same issue with mesh when I started using. I don't know if this will help but I am currently a Vista user with SP1 installed. In order for me to have Mesh start without error UAC must be turned on. I tried to turn off UAC because I do find it annoying, however it seemed to fix my mesh problem. If any of you are on Vista try that. XP users sorry I don't have a fix for that one.Saturday, September 6, 2008 10:20 PM

also I have the same problem: failed to start live mesh
can you help me?Sunday, November 2, 2008 1:10 PM -

XP Pro
New Install. Have tried to reinstall several times, and also I have uninstalled Silverlight 2.0 and 1.0, but that does not seem to havee mad a difference.
Will try a new account and see if that works.

Linuzo, I have the same problem as you have.
This is how Microsoft responded to me on januari 21, 2009
Unfortunately your encountering a bug we have found with Passport authentication. We have been working with the Passport team to get a fix that they will have ready here next week. There isn't any other work around or fix we can try until they release thier fix.
I've resolved your bug against the primary we are using to track it, you will be able to see the active state for that bug by looking at the feedback for this one.
So lets hope that next week the problem is fixed, because I like the product a lot.Saturday, January 24, 2009 10:14 AM -

Guys, you have 188 errors with "Failed to start" at Connect. Do you really need another 10 or 100 or whatever? =)
I'll supply you: I failed to start Mesh on either of my W7 x64 computers =)

You'll note that there are also many threads and posts here for "Failed to start."
There are a number of possible reasons for the problem, which I won't repeat here. I will, however, add that I have Live Mesh running on Windows 7 x86 and x64 and have not encountered this problem. Based on the number of reports of the problem, I consider myself lucky.
The recommendation to file a bug report with logs is to provide more data to the developers to try and determine the causes for this situation.

Hello Stephen,
I noticed that already. May be it would be good to fix it already? =) Not that I'm great in coding and all that stuff (I have almost zero knowledge about it) but if I were an author for the programm I definitely would consider the issue as a showstopper. Really while I can be happy or unhappy using it, I am perfectly unable to be happy or satisfied with a program which don't even start =(
BTW, I was lucky too before reinstalling my RC x32 with RTM x64. Moreover, I still have LM working on my Windows mobile (though with an error while starting and some minor glitches).
P.S. "There are a number of possible reasons for the problem, which I won't repeat here" - may be there is an accumulated list of possible workarounds somewhere?
http://komatozo.blogspot.comFriday, November 20, 2009 2:31 PM -
Unfortunately, no accumulated list that I have access to. :-( The best I can suggest is searching the forum, assuming that they fixed search with the forum s/w update yesterday!
And, yes, I would certainly hope that the next release addresses this area. It has been a while since our last build and I know they've been working hard for months. Rumor has it that the Windows Live Wave 4 beta will hit early next year and Live Mesh will somehow be a part of that.

Hi all,
I've just googled my way to this thread. I have same problem (no worries Ben, I'll submit a bug report every day if necessary).
But what's interesting is - Live Mesh WAS working for a week or two without problems, and all of a sudden I get the "can't start" error. I do have Hamachi installed as service, but they co-existed for a while without problems. I'm also running this on Windows 7 64bit, but again - it was working for a while. Only apps that have been installed/updated between the working period and non-working period were Firefox and Java (update). Anyway, sorry to hear there is no workaround, this means I am stopped from using Mesh until it's solved, because "syncing" something between my home computer and >nothing< doesn't help much.Tuesday, December 8, 2009 6:49 AM -
I was happily using live mesh on my desktop computer, when one day it gave me the "Failed to start" error. It was working fine on my other two laptops in the house, so I knew it was something dealing with my computer. I went to mesh.com, removed it from the list, uninstalled it from my computer, and then tried reinstalling it. It wouldn't install because of a network error. This made me realize it was probably spyware. Sure enough I did a scan and removed the spyware, and now it installed and is working fine.
I hope this helps other people out there.

The same with me. One of my workstations "all of a sudden" stopped working. The others are (currently) working fine.
After reading your message I tried running "Microsoft Security Essentials" to scan for viruses/spyware and it came up with nothing (albeit I just did a quick scan) with updated spyware profiles.
Can you share any more details?
Thanks!

Like others, I've got a "clean" computer according to my antivirus and antispyware software, so I'd appreciate more info about the spyware you've removed..EDIT: Interesting enough, I've uninstalled Mesh ~3-4 months ago after repeated problems with not starting (ever). So I've gave it a shot just now, and it installed just fine, and is starting properly, without any cleanups or whatever. So if there is someone that had this problem a while ago, you should try again, perhaps a newer version of agent or something.. Good luck!

My original setup was I had my computer set up with a static IP address and DNS servers. I also had several ports forwarded to the computer that had the problem. I also had hamachi installed.
I got rid of the static ip address, and forwarded ports. I also uninstalled hamachi. I also ran a spyware scan.
What I think did the trick was to log onto www.mesh.com and delete the problem computer. I then uninstalled LiveMesh using add/remove programs. I then restarted the computer.
I logged into www.mesh.com again and added the problem computer. It installed and started working just fine.
Freaky and I don't know what I did, but it is working now.

So actually it could be anything from Hamachi, network settings, to bug in Mesh..
I did uninstall Mesh, and today before installing it back I've deleted it from my network on mesh.com. Since previous reinstall trials were done 4 months ago, I don't really remember if I've tried removing it there before.. I've read at several places that this can sometimes help. So I've tried it, and it did the trick.
Btw, I do have Hamachi on same computer, but haven't uninstalled it. It did update once or twice in those 4 months though.. What else? I've read a lot of people have problems with Windows Update communication, and especially in corporate networks (SMS/WSUS). My problematic computer was in corp network, and was getting updates from WSUS. So that could be a problem, but I haven't touched that, so I doubt it.
@Jame Healy - Please try a simple step when you read this, go uninstall Mesh from local computer, and than go on Mesh.com and remove it there.. And than go and try to install it from Mesh.com directly. That's about only thing that MrScience and me did the same. Only that I've uninstalled and than removed from network, and MrScience first removed from network, than uninstalled.. but perhaps any combo works. And if that solves your problem, I sure hope a lot of other people will have the same luck.

Thanks for the update, MrScience101. Yes, a removal from the Mesh and a reinstall is often a good "hit it with a hammer" solution. It may have been some issue with Hamachi, but I don't think so. And, based on your log, there was no spyware, just tracking cookies.

I had the same "failed to start" message yesterday (4/6/2010) on one, not both of my computers that have Mesh. By experience, I immediately went to the same solution: delete from Mesh, uninstall, reinstall. The result was 50+ unresolved conflicts, so the whole thing took at least an hour to sort out. This seems to happen every 4-6 months or so. A bit of a pain.Wednesday, April 7, 2010 12:51 PM
