Same here. Same error code and happened when I tried to upgrade DirectX. Activation worked just fine but Validation fails. This is stupid and when I checked all MS recommended checks for fake software, all appears well including the extensive holographic markings on and in the CD. Yet I am told that I have an invalid license! Output of the Diagnostic tool is as follows:

I can sadly add myself to this growing list of affected users. This has been a real pain - was hoping to get stuck into some work on the weekend today and now I've spent the last three hours trying to track down the cause. Who can I bill for the lost productivity? It appears in my case that the cause was a DX10 update. Is there any way to roll back the DX10 changes?Saturday, August 25, 2007 3:15 AM

How many times in how many threads do I have to repeat this before anyone notices?! IT IS NOT DUE TO EITHER BIOSHOCK OR THE DX UPDATE!!! Neither of the two are a common factor amongst all affected users.Saturday, August 25, 2007 3:19 AM

Windows Vista is starting to get on my nerves. This is not the first time this has happened and my copy is certified genuine by Microsoft themselves.
I bought 2 copies of windows ultimate editon for the 2 computers I have at home. One i uninstalled and it is locked safely away , the other is on the pc i am currently using - except now with way less functionality.
As a client of microsoft that has always updated to the newer versions and has always bought genuine copies I am starting to think about changing to another OS because I can't keep calling them to sort this out.
If they want to keep me as a customer it is best they sort their nonsense out...
this operating system is costly and full of bugs!!!!

In my case DirectX was the only thing I updated today - the validation error sprung up shortly afterwards. I might be leaping to conclusions though..

It's not just DX. I got burned downloading the Vista performance patch (KB938979) on one Dell, and a different patch (KB938194) on another Dell.

Primexx;
Never said that DX being updated is the reason WHY this is occurring, particularly since MS wouldn't LET ME update DX because Verification is saying that my Vista isn't genuine,
I am merely saying it was while attepting to do the upgrade to DX that the message occurs.
I'm sure that I would have had the same problem no matter WHAT component I would have been updating/upgrading so long as that would have required that product verification had to be run prior to the component being updated/upgraded.
Some of those who posted have said their problem occurred AFTER applying an upgrade of DX, in which case DX may be the cause or else the process of upgrading a component of any kind causes damage that makes Vista appear to be illegal. That is most likely the case, if you ask me.
I just think that DX updates/upgrades are so common that the finger of guilt is pointed at it instead of where it should be pointed, at the verification mechanism and its support files. That is where I think the problem will be found.
In any case, I have a problem report logged and when tech support gets back to me I will let the other posters on this topic know what the outcome is in my case.

ShyGiy I'm directing my "not DX" comment at those who are pointing to it as the problem, not necesarily you or a number of other people who got the issue before actually installing DX.Saturday, August 25, 2007 4:23 AM

As promised, I am posting the response from MS support as to the cause/resolution of this problem.
I have been told that "This is a known issue with our WGA validation servers which has been resolved by Microsoft".
Indeed, it has been resolved... at least in my case for the moment. After waiting about eight hours, I went through the process again, for about the 10th time. It worked just fine, verifying that I have a legal version of MS Vista, just as I said I had.
I hope MS can keep their WGA validation servers functioning properly now so we won't have to go through this again in order to apply simple updates/upgrades to our software systems.
I hope the rest of you have also been able to successfully appy your changes as I finally was able to do.
If you are still not getting Verification the next step in order to fix the problem as told to me by MS Tech Support is:
Re-enter product key and then re-activate the system in order to refresh the relevant data store. To do this you would:
================================================
1. Click the Start Button, right-click on "Computer" and click "Properties".2. Click "Change product key".
Note: The operation requires administrative privileges, click "Continue" or "Allow" when the User Account Control dialog-box appear.
3. Enter the same product key you originally entered when you installed Vista and click "Next".
Then, confirm if the issue is resolved again. However, if the problem still exists or you encounter any other problems, you will need to contact MS support to resolve the problem.
