WHS Restore PC with new hard drive of different size RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have had WHS running on my home network for over 6 months with no issues.  One of the desktops, an older HP, is having some hard drive issues, not critical yet but I'd like to replace it before it fails.  However, I'd like to replace it with a larger drive, say 320GB instead of the 160GB it currently has.  Will WHS correctly perform a System Restore to this computer if the hard drive is a different size?  Or should I attempt to find an exact replacement drive?  Thanks!

  • Hi Richard,
the disk is not that important, but the volume you have to create before starting the restore must have at least the size of the original volume. Larger is not a problem, but smaller will not work. So a larger drive is fine.

  • Richard,

If you Client is still running fine and you have a spare drive connection on it, then it might well be easier to use the program 'ClientRestoreWizard.exe' which is in the WHS folder under Program Files.
It means you don't have any problem ensuring network connections, drivers etc., it does mean though, that you need to ensure you point the restore at the correct drive!

  • Thanks, Colin.  Unfortunately the machine has only the one drive, but as I said, it's not quite "dead" yet so I have some time to find a suitable larger drop-in replacement and use WHS restore to rebuild it.
