"Windows Vista, Build 6001, This copy of Windows is not genuine." Blank screen.

    Question

  • Screen is blank with no options and just has the watermark stating "Windows Vista (TM) Build 6001 This copy of Windows is not genuine"  in the lower right hand corner. I tried system restore, but no luck there. I have a lot of valuable pictures so I don't want to reset to factory conditions. The Windows is genuine because it came with the laptop when I bought it and have only had issues within the last week. I don't know. Please help! There are no options on this blank screen, only the options to restore or run checks at startup.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
     - IN YOUR OWN THREAD, please

  • I'm not even able to use the desktop... the screen is blank with the watermark once I log in. There is no start menu, no icons, and I can't run the command prompt even in safe mode.

(What 'run checks at startup' are you offered?)
You should still have an option to open Internet Explorer?
If so, go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 and opt to Run the download rather than save it - then post the results.

If you have no Internet Explorer option, then try booting to Safe Mode with Command Prompt - can you log into that?

When you use the F8 option to get to Safe Mode, are you also offered the Repair Your Computer option?

  • When I first start my laptop, I press F11 to go to system restore.  When I started it in safe mode with command prompt, it just moved the text "Build 6001, This copy of Windows is not genuine." to the top of the screen. I am not able to download anything. I can't run the control panel either. It's just a blank black screen with those words on it whether I start it in safe mode or regularly.

  • I did tun the System Repair, and it says it is finished and repaired, it automatically restarts, but no luck, it still sends me to the blank screen.

I think that your problem is more than simply a problem with WGA - I suspect that you have serious hard drive corruption issues.
I recommend that you repost your problem with details of what we've learned here, in the Windows Vista repair forum, here....
where specialists can assist (I could probably solve this if I was sitting at the computer, but I'd have difficulty knowing where to start in a forum context!)
