When you reinstall (full system recovery) you should not have to enter a product key if this product is a recovery from a factory recovery program disk. If this is an OEM version of XP (disk says for sale with a new computer) or the like then you will absolutely need the product key from the bottom of the laptop to activate it or purchase a new XP license. Contact the seller of the computer for assistance in obtaining a new COA Product Key. You CAN NOT use your friend's product key as you very well could cause him issues.- Proposed as answer by David. Hello jenny2777,
The product key revealed by Magical Jelly Bean is the one installed in your Windows installation, except as you posted it is your friend's product key that you entered, or it could be the default product key that is used to install Windows temporarily but cannot be activated.
It is unusual for a manufacturer's hard disk based recovery program to request a product key....what make and model of netbook is this?
Ad LVTravel is correct, you should contact your manufacturer for a replacement Certificate of Authenticity (CoA). If necessary, take a nice close-up digital picture (use a good digital camera not a cell phone camera, and use the macro setting on your camera) and email it to your computer manufacturer's tech support as proof that the product key has rubbed off.
BTW, many laptop manufacturers are now placing the CoA inside the battery compartment to keep this exact problem (product key wearing off) from happening.

hi i did not have a disk as i do not have a cd drive.i did a full system recovery using what was installed on the netbook.when the netbook restarted after the recovery it asked for a product code.i could not get off this page to search on my netbook for a product key in the database.so i use a friends code, thinking i would be able to at least get onto the netbook to search the data base,i use magic jelly bean to search for the product code ,one is found but windows activation states its wrong.would this be the genuine coa key ?i will try to contact the computor manufactor.i cant see why sellers put the codes on the bottom of laptops as they do wear and its impossible to read the coa codes.i have brought 2 laptops for my children 2 months ago and both codes have rubbed off this causes no end of problems.Friday, October 15, 2010 9:36 AM
