  • Hello, I have been using my windows xp professional since february 2006. Over the course of time. I have re-installed the OS. dozens of times on the same machine, due to all sorts of difficulty from virus' to instability of the OS to hard drive crashes.
My problem is that I use this computer quite a lot. Just recently I had to re-install the system because of a virus attack..I do have protection against attacks, but it seems that I get hit every now and again that I can't recover the system.

The point I am trying to make is that the last time I tried to install the OS, My cd key became invalidated from being used too often..

I had to call Microsoft to have them do an over-ride on the cd key so i could install. The big question is, do I have to call Microsoft every time I re-install my OS after this point or can I get a fresh CD Key from them..the last time I was on hold and they hung up on me...I didn't feel like staying on the phone for another 2 hours of sweet elevator music....
I just installed AOL 9.1 and wound up getting some kind of virus from the install..My anti-virus was activated during the set-up.
I haven't fully checked out my system...but I am afraid if I have to re-install again. I'm going to Linux.......

    Any suggestions?

    steve7132_yahoo.com,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Forum.  The purpose of this forum is the support of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program. Virus questions are off topic. I understand however your question lies more on the side of how to reinstall your Operating System without having to call telephone support. Where this too is off topic,  I will pass along that when a reinstall occurs, each time activation and validation will have to be done. You are correct that there is no getting around this. Remember that activation and validation is to protect you, the consumer, and your purchase of Genuine Microsoft products. Also, if you continue to have issues and/or situations where you are reinstalling several times, protocols are going to eventually lead you back to Telephone Support/Activation. My suggestion to you, is to stay up-to-date with the most current updates available at Microsoft.com and keep an up-to-date anti-virus program such as OneCare.com .  Also, most hardware that fails will continue to fail more frequently till it is replaced or until you purchase a new computer and are no longer dependent on the hardware that is frequently failing. Now a short word on virus', they are unpredictable. There is really no way to fully identify, verify, and remove virus' once they have attacked, completely for sure. Which is why it is imporant to have your first line of defense being an up-to-date antimalware program installed. (Like www.OneCare.com)

I hope this information helps. On a personal note, I stay as far away from "Free Software" as I can. OneCare.com is a great tool, along with safety.live.com Also, I personally don't play around with the system registry either and I do not play around with my internet browser (Internet Explorer 7). It is very hard to trust 3rd party software makers these days. The short answer is, you just don't know how those programs are written or who they are written by.

I hope the information I have provided helps. I wish you the best in your computing experience. Remember that your original questions were off topic. Perhaps the expertzone located here:
