Windows 7 Build 7600 : This copy of Windows is not genuine (Gateway NV73 Laptop) RRS feed

  • Hello,

    I received a Gateway NV73 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium for Christmas 2009. Last night (Feb 15, 2011) I received a pop-up window stating my version of Windows 7 was not genuine. I ran the validation test and it came back stating that my version was not valid. I have loaded a few program on it since I received it. PK-Zip, software for my Nook Color, digital camera and palm pre plus. I have also loaded some others such as MP3 Rocket and Quick Media Converter and my Office 2000, Microsoft Security Essentials and such . I run update weekly to make sure all programs are up to date. I contacted Gateway and they told me to reset the computer back to the factory build as a resolution. I called them again this evening "requesting" a copy full copy of Windows 7. I told them that if my version is not genuine resetting it is not going to resolve the issue. They refused but offered to send me a restore disk for $20. I am leery of this because I will be using the same PID number. I ran the MGA Diagnostic tool and am hoping you can tell me if my OEM is one of the blacklisted and incase it is hopefully get some advice on how to proceed. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated,

    Computers, which are built by large manufactures that come with Windows Pre-Installed, come with two (2) Product Keys:

    A)   OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the OEM Bios Flag found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Windows looks at the motherboard and sees the proper OEM Bios Flag (for that Manufacturer and that version of Windows) and Self-Activates. (that's why you did not need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)

     

    B)     COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side (or bottom) of your computer. It is a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations (sush as if the OEM SLP key stops self-activating for whatever reason). The key must be activated by Phone. (Note: All manufacturers that use the OEM SLP system are required by contract to include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker, that has a COA SLP key, on the computer)

     

       Your Windows is using an OEM SLP key, but (for whatever reason) cannot see the OEM Bios Flag in the computer’s motherboard and is unable to Self-Activate.

      To fix the issue, you will need to change out the OEM SLP key with the COA SLP key.  The normal way to do this is to click the ‘Start’ button, right-click ‘Computer’, select ‘Properties’ and then click ‘Change Product Key’ (located in the lower right-hand side of the window). Enter the COA SLP key and follow the instructions in the Change Product Key Wizard.

  • Darin,

    Thank you for your help.  I was afraid I was going to have to purchase a new OS.  I followed your instructions and I am up and running just fine!!   I saw another post regarding changing the OEM SLP to the COA SLP and you said that changing it would break the OEM End User Licensing Agreement.   Will I have any issues now that I have done this?
