Activation and Update Blues

Microsoft Office XP Professional:
Validation Incomplete: Office Must Be ActivatedI am having a little problem with my system rebuild. I just finished installing Office XP Professional (version 2002) on my fixed, Windows XP system and wanted to apply the updates. After installing the WGA ActiveX control the site gave me the message above.
So I loaded Word and it came up ready to go. Then I loaded Activate Product from the Office Tools and it said "This product has already been activated."
The help documents were no help because they say to activate the product.
All the Microsoft site software says that I should activate the already activated product.
Can you give me some help on how to convince Windows Genuine Aggravation that it should let me get the updates?

Hi,
Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\
Look for data.dat file
Right click the data.dat file, then click “Delete”.
After deleting, close the folder. Open any Microsoft Office product (e.g. Word, Excel) and try to activate it.
If successful with the activation, go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/Validate.aspx?displaylang=eng to validate again.
Let us know how it goes and thanks for your patience!
