File transfers with XP machines lock up WHS requriing hard reboot. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been having this problem for a while and it is very irritating. When an XP machine connects to a share and copies a file, regardless of size, it very likely will hang all of the available shares and require a reboot of the WHS. The reboot usually hangs up at some point when the desktop is still on the screen but all the icons are gone.

This ONLY happens with Windows XP. Vista, 7, Mac OS, and Linux clients all happily transfer files back and forth.  The only exception to this is sometimes Mac OS file transfers have a little delay of maybe 20 seconds before transferring extremely small (200k) files but then all is normal.

The hardware is a Dell GX520, gigabit switch, and linksys WRT54G with DDWRT firmware. I have tried MANY different desktop and laptop XP systems and they all do the same thing.
